So I've been thinking of making some bike units. However a three man bike squad is £25! I almost fell off my chair when I read that; even with discounts it's too much to even think about for just one 7+Man Squad!
This is when I had a great idea. Why not use Warhammer Fantasy horses? Same size, same base (I think?!) and you can get five for £8.
Or if you want the riders, bases and more bitz then you can get 8 Brettonian/Empire/High Elf/Lizardmen cavalry etc for £18 a box (this is about 4 times cheeper!!) I could even use them as a basis for starting fantasy one day (and if they come with shields thats my Black Reach terminators converted to assault terminators very nicely too). As for riders, I have marines already, they just need a way to be mounted.
So I'd like to know...has anyone done this? Does it just look stupid/are the proportions just wrong? I think it could look pretty amazing having a mounted command squad, and one mounted on Cold Ones would be crazy.
To be honest if your putting them on horses it would look pretty retarded, I'm sure a 1000 pound space marine with his armour on would squash a horse flat. What I have seen done though is space marine scouts on dark elf cold ones and they looked pretty nice, so i would go with cold ones rather than horses, it doesn't completely fit, but would be better than horses.
Frankly, it would look terrible. I have a Bret and High Elf army for fantasy. Not only are the horses too small but they come with square slotted cavalry and the built in 'saddles' for the Knights wouldn't fit a pair of space marine legs.
Biker bases are rounded and actually significantly longer then the square cavalry bases. If you don't have any biker marine legs just plopping tactical legs or whatever on there would look bad unless you are very highly talented with cutting and sculpting green stuff.
Not trying to rain on the parade or whatever but it's just not worth it. You'd have to find a way to make them WSYIWYG somehow. And the time, materials and effort to make them would end up costing you more then just getting a box of bikers.
Try Ebay you can usually get some good deals there. But Long of the short just drop the cash. =/
There's at least one bitz website that sells a complete basic bike for £3, and £1 per set of biker legs.
Take a marine upper body and head from another kit (such as Assault Marines -you get extra bodies there) and you can assemble bike units somewhat more cheaply. You don't even need to buy many biker arms if you're creative about positioning weapon arms.
I bought five bikes online (£20 total) and magnetised the legs. With similarly magnetised legs on my command squad models, I can swap their torsos from one to the other - giving me the option to run either a mounted or footslogging command squad without buying the command squad kit twice.
Both types of model are "supplied with 25x50mm bases" so I can just round the edges a bit. In that case, are you sure the horses are too small, bikes are about the same size.
Since my army is painted as Dark Angels, there's a fair bit of fluff about the Order and how they used to be a group of knights who cleansed Caliban; they later became Space Marines (or maybe when they became marines they did it, that makes more sense I suppose). I figured some of them might, with surgery and genetic manipulation, make horses who could carry a marine so they could live out the old days.
Scouts on the other hand could go on horses pretty easily with no heavy armour. So I could make some Scout Bikers, would this look better?
Nice idea for a conversion project, but you would lose a point of toughness bonus that marines get for riding a bike. I dont see how you could claim the bonus on a horse or cold one. Have a look at the Ravenguard box set - excellent value for money.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
Interesting to know which is true...but assuming that the new bike bases are longer (I'd think they would be. Bikes overhang the short edges of the cavalry base by a decent amount!):Both types of model are "supplied with 25x50mm bases"
Not so very long ago, they did come on fantasy horse bases, and I haven't spent the money to rebase mine. It really doesn't change the game (unlike terminators on tiny bases) since they take up the same amount of frontage in melee combat on either type of base. There could be some argument about the shorter old base making it harder to charge the bikes, but only if you're charging them from behind, in which case a compromise could be to allow an extra .5" of charge range when charging the rear end of the bikes...which would virtually never make a difference.
But, to echo what others have said, it's a terrible idea to mount space marines on ponies. MAYBE the WFB Empire engineer's mechanical steed, but ONLY if you're doing a steampunk themed army.

But that aside, space marines of any flavor would look terrible on horse for the most part. Unless you were trying to do thunderwolves on the chaos knight horses. Which IMO still doesn't look that good. Plus you can buy these sweet resin wolves that are made specifically for space marines. But anyway, long story short, marines on horses look bad. Just get the bikes man. Less hastle all around. From other players who would look at you like you were tokin up, to just the amount of time needed to convert what would still be a silly and wrong looking model.
Ha, thanks very much for all the input, looks like it's better to just give up on the idea. With a community the size or 40k, if it hasn't been done there's probably a pretty good reason (in this case looking stupid)
Actually I have seen this. A guy place SW at my local GW. He has wolf riders, but they only make one wolf rider model, so he had to use Bretonnian horses. Honestly it doesnt look that bad( at least his don't) he painted them pretty well. I did ask when I played him though, are those horse?
His reply, "yeah, they don't make wolf mounts, so I had to use something of the same size."
So GoliathX if you do use the horse just know thier is at least one other person in the universe that does it, but not for bikes, they are "wolf" Mounts.
They actually have a BIKE for the bike LOL.
My advice, go on to ebay or one of the hundred of bitz stores, and you can order just the bike. YOu can get the bikes if you buy them straight up for $5.50 or you can try your luck at ebay.
here is one link, of a real quick search.
