Hiya! I'm just getting my feet wet with 40k and I really enjoy Space Marines. I was wondering what a good augmentation would be for a Assualt on black reach army because I'm going shopping tommorow. I was going to get the battleforce but My budget dropped massively. That being said my current budget is $50 or the cost of a Land Raider Crusader if that is ideal.
Second what is a good number of different colors for a Marine army scheme
thanks tons in advance for your advice!
If you can scrape together the money, a Battleforce of some sort will easily give you the best bang for your buck.
Otherwise, I suggest looking up your local Craigslist (Or Kijiji, or whatever other online classifieds site is popular in your area) and seeing what you can get used for cheap. I've gotten some good stuff for great prices that way.
+1 to that... 50 bucks doesn't get you much in store... the codex is required if you don't have it. Also if you split the black reach box with someone, a second one is a good deal. Even if you throw the Orks away the terminators and dread pay for the box by themselves.
For unit selection it really depends on your style and or likely opponents and your Chapter/colour scheme ties into that. Lots of White Scars bikes or mechanized Iron Hands? There is no one way to play SMs.
I think i want a shooting heavy army, so I'm grabing a Devastator Squad and an Assualt Squad for $60 because black friday is amazing
I'd suggest specializing with the devs... Lascannons are for some reason expensive for devs but you can build a good tank killer unit and missile launchers are good against infantry as well.
One thing to be careful with is blowing a lot of points on just a few guys... very easy to do with this army. For example, my Marneus Calgar and honour guard are a ton of points. and wwould get steamrolled by half those points worth of my ork boys... Four guys can't fight a mob no matter how hard they are...
It can be a pricey army, and tough to win with if you have a wonky list

Welcome to 40K and to the ranks of the marines!
AoBR is a great way to get started, and there are many options to make a shooty list! Be sure to get that codex at some point and always be sure to have the 1HQ 2Troops.
As for colours, it all depends on your favorites! Most marine chapters I see usually stick to 1 or 2 main colous. There are a lot of GW provided ones to pick from, but if you don't like them, theres always a custom chapter (thats what I do)...
Best of luck!
my suggestion is to not take suggestions and play what you like not what other people tell you is good.
Space marines 6 dread army Wins: 4 ties:2 Loses:7 Modified Standard nilla marines Wins:37 Ties:8 Loses 42 Daemonhunters Wins:3 Ties:0 Loses:1 Full assualt concept army wins: 6 Ties: none Loses: 2
First of all, I would recommend supporting your local hobby store if possible. Buying things online is nice, but keeping your gaming community alive is nicer. Where can you game if there are no stores around?
50$ is not a bad start if you are looking to expand on the assault. I would suggest anything from a Rhino or drop pod, tactical marines and scouts. Whirlwinds are a great way to suppress infantry hordes at a competitive price and point cost.
These are all core models/units that will always be a good army choice.
Well, I went ahead and snagged a Scout Squad and a Devastator sqaud online, and went to my hobby shop to buy up on paints thanks for all the suggestions guys it's helped out a lot!
In an ideal world, you could get some of every unit and pick and choose between games. Really though, you need to work towards a list. While some races can just buy obvious units and relax, Marine players have to get synergy.
Our units are pretty good, but can never fight alone because they get outclassed. However we have no gaps in our abilities and can do some of everything!
You must have these things in a list for it to work against everyone:
Good Troops: Usually Tactical Marines in Rhinos. I have a small Scout squad too but generally Tactical marines are the way to go. They need Rhinos for a little safety. All the glitz and glamour of other units are fine, but these guys win you games.
Long Range AntiTank: Some races are fast and can run away from you. They tend to be weak defensively though, so you need long range power. Popular choices are Predators and Landspeeder Typhoons, Devastators are ok too just a bit expensive pointswise.
Speed: You need something fast and scary in any list. Fast units can contest stuff and get right into someones face; the popular examples being Landspeeders and Attack Bikes to Melta big scary tanks. Sometimes sitting and shooting will just not cut it. This is another reason to buy Rhinos, they are really wonderful at getting from A to B (or at least half way )
You need to be able to gun down assault units and quickly smash enemy gunlines. If you can't do that, the specialised races will eat you for breakfast.
What to buy: There's no cheep win button for Marines. You will have to spend money. However if you keep focussed it won't be so bad. My tip is get Black Reach and once you have primed and assembled these guys, buy the Battleforce and Codex. Thats about £100 for 30Marines, 5 Scouts, a Dread, Terminators and a Rhino. Note that this only gives you ONE of my big three! So from there buy things that can shoot far and/or move fast.
I suggest using other Black Reach bits as proxies if you can't sell them. For a while I used Deffcoptas as Landspeeders and stuff like that. Proxy whatever you like but buy the real stuff in the end.
Final word? Don't get carried away with exciting things like Vindicators and Land Raiders. The guns look big and cool but are ineffective without building a list around it.
