hey there, i was reading through the BA codex and i saw a Death Company Dreadnought is equipped with smoke launchers and is has the fleet special rule. this set me thinking, because the smoke launchers rules don't say you can't perform a fleet move after having used the smoke launchers.
does this mean you can have a dread with a 4+ cover save and have it make a run move??
Aren't popping smaoke launchers instead of firing a weapon? And doesn't run state that it is instead of firing a weapon? Therefore if both are instead of firing, I think it's one or the other. As in that's your action in the shooting phase completed
no, because the big book says: "Once per game, after completing it's move, a vehicle with smoke launchers can trigger them (it doesn't matter how far it moved ). Place some cotton wool or other suitable marker on or around the vehicle to show it is obscured. The vehicle may not fire any of its weapons in the same turn as it used its smoke launchers, but will count as obscured in the next enemy shooting phase, receiving a 4+ cover save."
i think this means it uses its smoke launcher at the end of the movement phase and not in the shooting phase. also, unit's that can't shoot weapons, like heavy weapons, because they have moved can run too. so a unit that is prevented from shooting should be able to run. or am i wrong here?
ok but it does state you cant fire weapons in shooting phase. Now I'm pretty sure the run rule is in place of firing a weapon, whch you can no longer do due to smoke, therefore it is not possible to run.
but that would also mean you can't run if you'r equipped with a heavy weapon and you've moved, since that also means you can't shoot.
You cannot move and fire a heavy weapon. Theres nothing stopping that model shooting with a pistol or any other equipment that allows moving and shooting. It does not say moving is instea of firing as it does with running
ok than, but how can units run when they're not even capable of shooting because they have now shooting weapon. how can they run instead of shooting if they can't shoot at all?
Just because they have no weapon doesn't replace their option to shoot in the shooting phase. They just have nothing to shoot. So running is their only option in this phase. They run instead of shooting which, though they have no weapons, they still can do
I've not consulted the BRB but I don't think you can pop smoke and then run.
In fluff terms I see a dread popping smoke and then running out of the cloud and in to full view again. Sort of amusing really.
I seem to recall and FAQ or some other document clarifying that dread's can't run and pop smoke but perhaps that's wishful thinking.
I guess I'm voting on the "no you can't" side of things. Being fleet is cool though and if you make it to combat you can't be shot at so...
