I'm about to make my tanks more WYSIWYG, that is take out the sponsons and change hulls to heavy flamers instead of heavy bolters. Here comes the problem, I don't see how the out of the box HF can fit the hull. Maybe someone got some pics?
Quick Google image search yielded no results
And I am talking 4ed tanks here. Not sure maybe new design has it fixed already...
I can't see an easy way to change the hull weapons.
I had to hack and fix my tanks, all of the hull heavy flamers I got out of land speeder and other similar space marine box sets (the heavy flamer looks so much better from those kits.) other than that it was a job of plasti-card and small rivets made from chopped up plastic hairbrush strands.
The new design has fixed it. The Sponson Heavy Flamers slot neatly into the Hull Weapon spot.
Other than that it's going to involve cutting, greenstuff, and perhaps plasticard.
(I just kept my old ones and got new ones rather than going to the trouble of taking stuff off, repainting it, etc)

If you don't want to model your own, you can always get the new Russ hull weapon bitz from ebay. They don't fit the housing perfectly, but a blob of greenstuff at the top and bottom will hold them in place nicely.

Well, thanks. That is unfortunate. I'll probably try some greenstuff/plasticard stuff with the regular heavy flamers or just buy new tanks sometime later.
I made all my 4th Ed. Tanks fully modular. It took a bit of doing, but because of the process I still find them to be the most fun out of the box model to build. Here are some pictures. As far as the hull weapon goes, I just bought a bit of plastic tube, magnetized the hull weapon hatch and used the chimera style flamer that was in the kit. The new kits do a nice job of all of this, but I just don't find them as fun to put together....but that's just me. Here are some pictures
