I know this may just be an isolated case, but in my last tournament, my lasguns did better than all of my special weapons combined. Alone, they killed a Daemon Prince, Space Wolf Logan, a Hive Tyrants, a Librarian, a Terminator Librarian, Blood Angels Astrath and half of a death company. Only 3 games, and that many kills. KNowing my luck with lasguns in the previous games, at the beggining of the third, I pointed to Astrath and the Terminator Librarian, and said "they will die by flashlight." They did.
Lasguns are amazing. I've decided to give up all of my special and heavy weapons in my army for lasguns. Too bad I can't equip Leman Russes with lasguns. :/

yea... isolated case.
...except for FRFSRF, sometimes quality just isn't what you need
I am totally with you that the humble lasgun CAN be amazing but 2 points
1. It is just an isolated case
2. How could you even consider putting some little S3 gun on the imperial guard mighty behemoth
lasguns are currently why i draw every match I play. I can't take an objective to save my life, but the emperor knows, even 3 squads of tac marines and a 5 man termi squad won't walk into 100 lasguns.

Ah, the humble lasgun! Fire fifty of them at some poor enemy squad and someone's bound to die. Though their effectiveness is related to how much the dice like you during a given match. It's the special weapons, Leman Russes, Devil Dogs, etc. COMBINED with all the lasgun shots that makes the enemy stop moving. Quantity is a quality on its own, after all.
I've had some good luck using lasguns against Monstrous Creatures. From the lasgun's point of view, the typical MC is about as hard to kill as a Marine combat squad (now that 2+ armor, T7 MCs are finally gone). It's also worth noting that lasguns are just as effective as special weapons against Marine players who have storm shield fetishes. That being said, do NOT rely on lasguns. They are a poor choice against average enemy infantry and remain useless against vehicles. I'd rather be lucky with my battlecannons.

If you roll abnormally well with 10 marines rapid firing bolters you can kill a max of 20 enemy models. However 20 guardsmen can kill up to 40 (more with orders). Although the average results are quite similar the extra dice multiply out the good rolls. Combined with the better reliability it means massed ranks are generally much better than elite units with similar baseline averages. You get those rounds of shooting where the performance of lasguns is staggering.

Unfortunately, Leethoof, I don't have your luck . I usually roll pretty average on my to hit with my lasgun fire, but by the time wounds, and armour saves or cover saves are rolled I barely kill anything with them. I can see 50 guardsman rapid firing is bound to take something out, but so far even when I use 30 or so my squads have never made their points back for just lasgun firing. My lasgun luck sort of rolls like this...20 guardsmen FRFSRF and kill 2 genestealers or 30 guardsmen rapid fire and can't kill a single sm scout...hehe! But generally my lasguns tend to follow mathammer odds very precisely. That is for about 150pts of guard (3 squads) rapid firing, (lets just ignore the sarg's pistol and give him a lasgun too) it gives you about 3 sm kills.......so that's what 50 to 60pts killed for 150pts paid? (I obviously don't play SM's).
