I'm collecting a few Dreadnoughts with the aim of assembling a Master of the Forge army as an occasional alternative to my regular Ultramarines. Right now I have three regular Dreads, I've just bought a FW Venerable Dreadnought, and I'll probably round things out with a couple of Ironclads in the future.
I haven't decided which weapons to give to the Venerable dreadnought. The regular Dreads have AC+CCW (with flamer), Lascannon+ML, and MM+CCW ( from Assault on Black Reach). Ideally the Venerable would complement my existing set-up. I'd consider magnetising the weapons, but I'm not sure how to do this with a resin FW model.
Ok what I did for my DA army was take my venerable dred and equip it with a hand and flamer and on the other a las cannon with for +20 points a storm bolter attached to its underside. With this you have optimal use, flamer that ignores cover and for short range, a storm bolter for long range, fist or the cysmic hammer for close range, and a las cannon for vehicals. Overall a pretty powerful vehical.
I'm leaning towards a plasma cannon as most players do.
Power claw with heavy flamer as the other arm.
assault cannons have a higher kill rate against everything over a lascannon the range is the only advantage but if your runnign a flamer with a DCCW thats close range take an assault cannon, it is better at killing all vehicles over the lascannon Esp. with BS 5 and it can actully kill alot of troops while the lascannon can only kill 1 per turn. and esp vs AV 14

Rafici has a point.
All depends on how you want to run them. Will you be podding dreads in his midfield or will you advance using a dreadwall or speartip?
Although I deeply respect the assaultcannon (being on the receiving end as well as on the firing one) when dealing with infantry, I recently found a plasmacannon to be a very helpful tool in the marine arsenal. None the less, when i run dreads, I generally go for rifleman dreads carrying two TL autocannons. These dish 4 shots per turn at 48" with more than decent strength. It allows me to pop transports, put wounds on MC...
I have three...PC/SB/DCCW, TLAC/HF/DCCW, and ML/TLLC (hellfire). To be honest, the plasma cannon has been least valuable, because I can get plasma cannons elsewhere in the list, except when I'm playing pure deathwing. The hellfire dread is great for antitank and anti-TMC work, but I occasionaly lament the absence of a DCCW. The star of the show is the autocannon/heavy flamer/DCCW vennie. Great for popping transports and then assaulting the contents, and the two TL shots from the autocannon are actually very well matched to the heavy flamer for anti-infantry work, too. I would concede that an assault cannon would be better for both killing transports and killing troops than the twinlinked autocannon, but my deathwing squads have enough of those, putting an assault cannon on every squad and on every vennie would be extremely cheesy and extremely one-dimensional.

Well i have build a variant that uses MM and a Plasma cannon.Desent range and two nice plates.Plus ignores most infantry armor, can mop hordes and has decent strength against vehicles.A ranged executioner,so far it has not failed me once.Did i mentioned that you can swift between krak and frag missiles?Of caurse it isnt for CC you understand!
Marnepup i understand that you use plasma cannons at the dev squads. The dread can ignore the gets hot though so for me its a bit more valuable than a lass cannon per se.Just my two cents.

Praise be to the Emperor!!
I understand your opinion Marnepup, but I think it mostly depends on the tactics used.
My rifleman dreads function as ranged platforms. Therefore I prefer to use the autocannon's range of 48" to inflict wounds from a distance instead without letting my opponent come close enough to assault me. The assaultcannon is marvelous, but I get it on other platforms. (in my LGS there are only ork and nid players so...I'm a fan of assaultcannons) When I go outside my LGS, the dread with the plasmacannon has yet to disappoint me. It is off course the synergy of your list that dictates the loadout or you units.
