Hi all, I am new to IG and picking up the codex today. I have an opportunity to purchase a Valkyrie for $45.00 No this is This is almost as much as a Battleforce so I am curious if I would be better purchasing 2 Battleforce, or buying a Battleforce and a Leman Russ/Demolisher?
Also curious I don't see many Army Lists with Valkyries. Are they not competitive or are Leman Russ's just a better investment? Thanks!
Armies: 40k: Imperial Guard, Orks Fantasy: Skaven
Most people like to convert their Valkyries to the alternate weapon load-out of the Vendetta, simply because the Valkyrie is anti-infantry, something the Imperial Guard already does in spades, and the Vendetta provides reliable ranged anti-tank.
For your first purchases however, 2 Battleforces is probably best. You'll need the infantry it gives you, especially if you want to play a hybrid or mostly infantry list. (And even if you don't, you'll won't need many more infantry, especially if you buy a few melta/plasma blisters as well). The Sentinels are always nice too.
"The sergeant major asked me what my job is. I told him it's to do what I am told. He gave me a medal. I like the Imperial Guard."

For that price, I'd grab the Valkyrie for sure. It's not that hard to convert into a Vendetta, just get a few Lascannon bits off of Ebay and convert them. It's cheaper than the Forge World kit. 2 Battleforces is a good starter, mainly just for the sheer volume of troops you get. Your next investment should probably be Chimeras. Chimeras are the heart and soul of any IG army, you should have at least 3. After that, it's up to you. Vendettas, Hellhounds, and Leman Russes are always favorites if you like tanks, Manticores, Hydras, and Basilisks are your choices if you like artillery. Being a treadhead myself, I prefer to go with the former, but both are equally valid. Welcome to the Guard, soldier! Here's your flashlight and T-shirt, now go out there and get those Xenos!
One thing to mention is that 40k is an expensive hobby. Imperial Guard armies are expensive even by that standard. That said, most of us built our armies a few bits at a time and continue to do so. 40k armies, in my experience, are never truly "finished". They just get larger over time.
What to buy when starting out has a lot to do with what type of list you want to start with. Mechanized vet lists are pretty efficient in both terms of cash and competitiveness. Infantry heavy armies are a little easier on the pocket but harder on the paint brushes.
My advice is to figure out where you want to start your army, and go from there. Personally I consider the Vendetta a non-essential, if fun way to get lascannons and a fast transport in the same package.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
Frankly, get what units you like. The guard is great, if you like something you can make it work. I think 2 battleforces is a bit overkill. I agree that Chimeras are a good buy. What kind of units do you like? Would an airborne element in your army be something that appeals to you?
I've not taken my Vendetta out of its box for about 4 months. A pure ground force can be perfectly viable.

Uh, the Cadian Battleforce is $95.00. So it's 2 Valks or a battleforce, not the other way around.
Maybe you're talking about the 10-man SQUAD boxes?
(BTW, a typical Marine army will cost around $450. A typical Mech IG army will run around $750.)
