After starting with the Assault on Black Reach miniatures for Space Marines and getting the WH40k paint kit, which came with 5 more Space Marines, I find myself with 5 extra Marines that I'm not sure if I can use in any way. My confusion increased when seeing the Space Marine Battle Force came with a Tactical squad of 10 units (9 Marines, 1 Sergeant), and another 5 Marines listed as a Combat Squad. Now I just cant wrap my head around why there would be 5 extra Marines with no Sergeant.
Can a Tactical Squad be used without a Sergeant? Or would it require getting a Sergeant to use them in any capacity beyond replacing special weapons troops with traditional bolt guns?
A sergeant can look like a normal Marine at the end of the Day. He might have a slightly different paint job, for example Ultramarine sergeants have red helmets. Other than that they can look exactly the same as a 'normal' squaddie. Armament wise they can have a Boltgun (like a normal Marine) or a Bolt Pistol and chainsword or, if you take upgrades, a plethora of other weaponry such a plasma pistols and powerfists.
Ruleswise though Tactical squads consist of 5 to 10 men, one of which is (and has to be) a sergeant. Only squads of 10 men can have a sepcial/heavy weapon though so a squad of 5 men will consist of 4 Marines armed with bolters and a sergeant armed with a bolter or close combat gear.
You could also build the spare guys with other pieces of wargear in case you ever want to swap out what the squad is armed with.
Thank you, Lord, for the reply. That's what I was thinking, but wanted to make sure with a number of tournaments coming up.
watchwood, that's what I was thinking about doing with these 5 extra marines, just in case I didn't want (or couldn't afford) the heavy weapons.
(Nice paintjob on the marine in your pic, btw. Truly amusing!)

Well, you could have a guy with a flamer, a guy with a plasma rifle, a guy with a meltagun, a rifle sergeant, a pistol and chainsword sergeant, a power weapon sergeant, a power fist sergeant, a plasma pistol sergeant...see where this is going?
And thanks dude - they look pretty good when actually seen as well, too.
Right-oh. Guess I'd better stock up on Sergeant-y stuff and heavy weapons. Right now just have one with missile launcher and one with flame thrower (just starting out)
If you want to upgrade the load out on your sarges, you can buy the plastic captain kit. this will give you extra shoulderpad options, powerfist/sword a combi bolter. If you want heavy weapons to add to your tacs to get some flexibility, buy the devastator kit. you get one devastator sarge and four marines with heavy weapons like Heavy bolter, ML, plasmacannon and lascannon. Even some spare pieces to convert some other marines to heavy weapons. Samething goes when you want transports for your tacs. NEVER EVER buy a rhino kit! buy the razorback or predator kit. both include the options for a rhino, so magnetise where possible and leave tophatch unglued and each of your razorbacks/predators can double as rhino's.
Be carefull to field 5 man tac squads though. you get free weapons like Flamer/Meltagun and ML/HB if you field em as 10 man squads thus increasing their effectiveness and survivability. remember you can always combat squad em if need be.
One thing you can do with those 5 Marines is leave them to one side untill you buy a Devastator squad. You get 8 weapons in the Devastator Box, or is it more than 8? Anyway, this will give you enough heavy weapons to equip 2 whole Dev squads. All you need is 5 spare Marines to put them on...... oh wait!!.... huzzah!
It's a Missile Launcher, a Multimelta, 2 Heavy Bolters, 2 Plasma Cannons, and 2 Lascannons....so yes, 8.
It'd be nice if they'd include an extra MM and ML, I gotta say.
This is true but that box is still amazing. Compared to what we used to have in the old Devastator Box. A Lascannon, Heavy Bolter, Plasma Cannon (all metal) and Missile Launcher. The metal ones never went together either. What a useless combination of weapons that was!!
Not sure about anyone else but I seem to have missile launchers falling out my ears. GW seemed to throw them into every box they did. I've just done 2 Devastator squads with 4 Launchers each and it stil hasn't dented my pile 'o Launchers
