I am considering the purchase of Land Speeders for my Blood Angels army, but before I invest what could be a considerable amount of money and time into these models, I wanted to ask a few questions.
So, are they a good option? If so, how effective would they be in my army, considering I play against Orks and Tyranids? My current army is relatively small, made up of only the models in the AoBR kit, a Battleforce, and one box of Death Company.
Also, how many should I buy? Is one enough? Or do you have to have a full squadron of three for them to be effective?
one is good, two is better, three only if you have the points to buy. Personally id go with a multi melta and typhoon launchers.
There's a decent tactica on one of the other parts of the site, definitely worth a look at.
There are a few decent loadouts that are well used (from a Vanilla perspective)
1.Typhoon+Heavy Bolter is expensive, but the firepower is excellent against anything bar LandRaiders and Terminators, and very long range so the weak armour is less of an issue. Remember Frags are defensive weapons!
2.Multimelta+Heavy Flamer has the two best weapons in the game against heavy armour and medium infantry respectively. Consider Deep Strike/Skimmers moving fast to get them where you want, these things are really flexible.
3.Multimelta. Less flexible than the second option, it's just a bit cheeper
Not sure what you mean by frags bit, how do frag grenades have anything to do with land speeders?
I believe he means choosing a frag missile over a krak. As they are str. 4 it'd be considered defensive.
Eternity Guard (SM) W-15/L-5/D-3
Lizardmen w16/ L1/ d2 :On hiatus since new rules... =/
I hope not, defensive weapons are only pintle mounted weapons (or there abouts). A Typhoon weapon system, regardless of one of it's weapons being strength 4 is not a defensive weapon. So if you move 12" you can only fire one weapon system, not 2nd weapon plus 2 frag missiles. Plus in the rulebook says only moving at combat speed can you fire 1 weapon plus all defensive weapons, which is not relevant to fast vehicles (says nothing about defensive weapons at cruising speed).

I disagree, there isn't anything which states that they are, not even in both erratas
Magnets, magnets, magnets - and you can try them all. If you are playing horde Orks, dual Heavy Bolter Speeders would make them cry... And they are not that expensive either.
I personally own 6 Typhoons, but I have them magnetized too so I am not limited to one built. Outside of Typhoons, they are an easy target for enemy AT weapons when they close in, so it is definitively not a unit you want to have exchange fire with your enmey. Try to keep them safe and pop them out for a sure-kill target.
One load out that I think does not work any more is the Assault Cannon Speeder. Shame because the model look very nice in that configuration....
