Had my fist 1500 point game with wolves and i am now considering what i need to upgrade to 2000 points. My attention is on long fangs, for me its either these guys or a landraider crusader and bloodclaws.
for the long fangs i am looking at:
Long Fang pack 1- 5 Long fangs with Missile Launchers and Pack leader
Long Fang pack 2- 4 Long fangs with Plasma Cannons and Pack leader
Long Fang pack 3- 1 Long fang with Missile Launchers 2 Long fangs with Lascannons and 2 Long fangs with Heavy bolters and Pack leader
my real concern is is this going to work, is it smart? the rest of my army is made up of 5 gray hunter squads in rhinos with wolf guard to and wolf scouts so having static fire may be a good thing.
Long Fangs are fine, though the generally accepted way to run them is all missile launchers...and for very good reasons. Missile teams are cheap, spammable, and a quite good against both tanks and infantry.
true and i would have run all three of my long fangs that way if i actualy had that many missiles to spare!
For Long Fangs try 1 Sgt, 5 heavy weapons. I reccomend two heavy bolters and 3 lascannons. The 3 lascannons go for one vehicle a turn and the heavy bolters go after infantry/light vehicles heading to the long fang unit/objectives.
Don't forget that missile launchers can be just as good against infantry as heavy bolers. They aren't as good against heavy vehicles as lascannons, but they double as anti-infantry weapons with frag missiles. Not the highest str, but the amount of wounds you can put on any bunched up groups can make up for that.
I've recently been building up a Space Wolves force and I've fallen in love with 6-man, 5-missile squads with lascannon Razorbacks provided the army I'm using has a lot of other big targets for the enemy to shoot at--thus drawing fire away from the transport. The missiles can kill infantry in swaths or pop transports/light-medium vehicles, whilst the lascannon can take out another transport or go after something heavier.
Woo! Fourth post! I'm getting better about quashing my lurking habit.
well i got to say i have been running the long fangs i mentioned above and wow, they sure as hell work, nothing seemed to scare my opponent like the thought of all that ranged death coming at him that he completly ignored 5 rhinoa charging at him and threw everything at the longfangs, nearly wiping them out by the second turn though.
i only run mine with 2 lascannons and two heavy bolters, but they do a good job at causing problems alongside their lascannon armed razorback, many people try to deal with them and forget about the other units getting ever so close to their own lines... someone i know has used units with 3 plasmacannons and two lascannons or something like that, it is very effective and causes folks to cry cheese while forgetting that they are a small unit overall.
I ran 2 squads with 3 ML 2 Lascannons and they were amazing. The missiles popped light armor or fragged troops, and the lascannons went to the medium/heavy vehicles. I also had attached a wolf guard in termie armor to get that 2+ wound soaker (although, at lower point games that is silly to do)
