Okay, I've decided not to make this into a huge noob deal. I recently got into WH40K, and have shopped around the different races. I've checked out Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos, even Tau and Tyranid. I have yet to find a race that I truly "dig" even though at one point in time each one of the previous appealed somewhat to me. So now i've come to stop and look at IG. I want an army with limited survability, not +3 saves and night unstoppable terminator beasts, just an army that can last a while on the table without being totally shredded. I also want a shooty army which techincally could last in CC, but not be its strong point. So what do you say? Is IG looking like the army for me? I like the fluff, and the figurines are boss (paint em up like the Communists a la Lenin and such) I'd appreciate any and all criticisms to my indecisiveness. Plus, is there a second edition of the Guard codex? I found one, online, and it says nothing about doctrines, so is that a new thing, or a chapter approve thing, or what? thanks in advance.
You have to work hard to make guard last in CC, but they do have some options.
IG is a "shooty" army in the sense that they can take lots of heavy weapons (and ordinance). The basic grunt and his basic rifle are both junk, and mainly serve as cannon fodder to keep the heavy guns firing. You have wonder stories of 10 guardsmen rapid firing 10 terminators and killing them all with just their lasguns, but that's the exception.
Go to your local hobby shop or, if you're really desperate, a GW store and read the codex. Online stuff is generally bad from what I've found (been looking for a witch hunters codex for weeks, only found random crap).

Other things to consider with the IG is the amount of models you have to paint as well as purchase to make a strong army. Other than that I would say that the IG is a good army for you. However they are pretty weak in CC, but they have some options. It could be a fun challange to develop a CC army if that is what your into.
Also, if you want a little CC punch to your guard, you an always ally sall daemonhunter detachments.

Thanks muchly. Actually, I just want a fun army that I can enjoy. I like living a little, that's all. I'm not asking for Super Marines...I just like an army that can stand a bit of thrashing, whether it be with better saves or massive numbers. And I like the strategy of move, shoot, and move...if necessary to maximize enemy weaknesses. Sadly, i've heard horror stories of a deep striking army or a fast Khorne army tearing IG a new one in Turn 2. That alone keeps me from jumping on the IG bandwagon right away. Plus, do you know how many people actually play IG? Do you face IG often? Again, thanks.
If you're worried about someone dropping in on you, why dont you drop in on them? A paratrooper IG army can be a lot of fun.
Ive been playing about 4 or 5 months now, and I was like you when I decided to go with Imperial Guard. I ended up picking them because I like the idea of playing humans (in almost all game settings) and I had heard that Space Marines were the standard "noob" army cause they come in the 40k starter set, so I knew I didnt want them.
What closed the deal was my friend who has been playing for quite sometime kept going on and on about how cool he thought the Guard was, and how he would love to have a WWII style army, and how sweet tanks were.
I bought a codex and a Cadian big starter box and got to painting! I love my Guard army, but it IS a lot of painting and you do need quite a few models. Its possible to go with less models that have a lot more gear to use up points, but the strength of the Guard really does lie in numbers. Plus I cant get enough tanks and sentinels!
I know have about 1500 points of Space Wolves, but you just feel so much more like a general and a strategist when you play Imperial Guard.
I am the Aquila-Guerilla!
if u don't wont sooper troops but wont something to help in cc the kroot is the way

From now on i shell be known as the black vegetable
for me it was like a tuning harp going off in my pants. i just knew the guard were for me... but to each his own.
ok, the biggest strength for the guard is also its biggest weakness. customizability. the new codex (yeah there's a new one) allows for alot of personalization with doctrines and different force orginizations.
you can deepstrike your whole army, infiltrate your whole army. have an all infantry army, have an all tank army. have a mechanized army, and a jungle fighting army, an elite army, a conscripted army, an army specializing in killing certain xenos... etc etc. the list is rather extenesive, hell you can even take a stab at making an assulty IG army (but i wouldn't).
but with all that freedom comes responsibility. they give you alot of rope, and if you're not careful you'll find yourself in a noose.
are second biggest strength is our overwhelming firepower. you don't have the best aim... or the best guns... or the best armor... but what we lack we make up for in numbers! IG can, handsdown, field the most firepower in the game bar none. not even Tau can match us in a straight up firefight.
our third strength is our ability to take casulties. now this is not unique to IG. Nids and Orks are very good as well. but those are just stinking xenos. when you loose a squad of (toy/fake) people.. it's like loosing your friends.. your comrades.. and then just shrugging your shoulders and getting back into it.
IG can take casulties that would cripple a SM army and still win. if you want an army without 3+ saves that can still last in a battle, IG has that in spades. how many armies can kill over 100 models in 6 turns?.. not many.
our fourth biggest strength is ... the big guns. yeah we can field an insane amount of heavy weapons. but when your average 40k player thinks of IG he thinks of two things. i sea of bodies, and Battle Cannons.
Mr. Leman Russ, Senior Demolisher and Sir Basalisk
and out weakness? well besides our difficulties in CC...
lots of work!! i have friends who bitch about "ohhh painting all these firewarrior is getting hard, i have over 40 of them!"
if you don't have the patience to paint over 100 models and tanks. then IG is not for you (unless you make mechanized/armored company).
good tactics is also a must. not just in the actual turn by turn. but in army composition and setting up the board. these all are huge factors in IG.
they can be frustrating to use ... especially when you get trounced. and it WILL happen. but in time, you'll hone your skills, learn to allocate your firepower wisely, and except the fact that in order to win.. you'll have to sacrifice many o' souls to the emperor.
but a finely tuned, well run, IG army is a thing of beauty. it can truely dominate almost any army out there!
well. that's my $3.50
One of the things about IG is that there really isn't any finesse with them. Their ideology is that to crush your foes, you require a sledgehammer. Or many of them.
I prefer my sledgehammers to take the form of two Leman Russ MBT's and a basilisk to catch those pesky buggers that try to hide. They also take the form of, oh, I think I have 18-20 heavy weapons in my army.
Basically, you want lots of big guns. If big guns aren't working, then you just need some bigger guns; which us IG players have plenty of.This couldn't be more true. I remember the last time I lined up against a Tau army. The other guy decided that the best method for him was to just sit there and trade shots with me. Even though he got the first turn, it didn't work out so well for him in the end.not even Tau can match us in a straight up firefight.
BoxANT amazing! I think my tuning harp just went off as well!
Anyway, I think its time to start an IG army...I'll get the newest edition of the codex sometime soon (no job = no money at the moment) and i'll progress slowly to get all i need. Thanks to all involved. Now if only the guys on the Chaos boards could be as nice. I'll keep you updated as to how the army is going.
Do you think Carapace Armour is worth the points? I heard about this Doctrine and I'm wondering if the +4 is worth it on Guardsmen. Thanks.
