So after a few days of looking over the diferent 40k armies me and my friend desided to start a Imperial Guard army together (Mostly because I liked the way they look. Well, Cadians looks cool, Not so much Catachan.. And because I like tanks.. XD) I'm compleately new to 40k but he played Imperial Guard once before a long time ago
Anyway we desided to start slow, Buying a few pieces at the time. A tank here, A box of infantry there.. He already had about 40 unpainted Cadian infantry so we got a start there. But I wanted to ask for a few sugestions. What should we avoid? What is a must have for a Imperial Guard army? All help and sugestions are welcome!^^
HQ: Company comand squad is good with a standard to keep the chaps happy. Take cammo cloaks too to keep them alive and your choice of special weapons.
Elites: I stay clear of the elites but psyker squads have their uses.
Troops: Infantry should either be platoons with AC+GL in each squad or mechanised veterans with 3 meltas or 3 plasmas in each squad. a good ratio is 2 melta squiads to one plasma squad. mechanising the CCS should also be used in this ratio. HWS, SWS and other units can be added if you like them.
Fast: cavalry can be great but are very vulnerable. Vendettas are fantastic and all the hellhound variants are ok. Cheap outflanking sentinels using AC on flank armour can hunt tanks quite well. Armoured sentinels are good for tying up infantry units (without powerfists) in useless combats.
Heavy: Basic Russ with hull HB are good. Addidng plasma sponsons adds lots of firepower but they become static fire support. Basic Demolisher with hull lascannon is good too and quite mobile. Other tanks are ok but those on a chimera hull are vulnerable due to the weak armour and many of them being open topped.
Quorn! - Protein for the Protein God.
Here's what I'd get, in order.
First, a command squad and a bunch of troops. This is the backbone of the Guard, so you'll want to make sure you have enough.
Second, I'd get some Chimeras. Mechanization is the biggest strength of the guard. Despite what people say, the Guard really isn't a horde army in the strictest sense, the way that Orks and Tyranids are. Get some transports to keep your guys alive and get them where they need to be.
Next, get some heavy fire support. Depending on your playstyle, I'd recommend either getting some Russes or artillery. If you're going for a more gunline strategy, get some Basilisks, Manticores, or Hydras. If you're more of a mechanized warfare type, get some Russes. There are plenty of threads on tread tactics out there, SandWyrm's blog is a good place to start.
Finally, pick up some more exotic elements to flesh out your army. Hellhounds are nasty against infantry, Sentinels add some good fire support in lower point games, and Vendettas are ridiculously good. Among the Elites, Stormtroopers and Psyker Battle Squads are the only worthwhile choices. The former should be run in groups of 5 and armed with meltas or plasma guns, and the latter should be filled out and put in a Chimera. That should get you up to around the 1500 to 2000 point level. Once you're ready to move into Apocalypse levels, there's nothing like a Baneblade to make a treadhead like me squeal with glee.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the replies!
Mad Cat, With Basic Russ and Basic Demolisher you mean the Leman Russ Battle Tank and the Leman Russ Demolisher model packs right?
Also, Looking at the Games Workshop website I dont see any Vendettas and the only Psykers are a couple of models listend in HQ so could you give a bit more information? Dont have any book yet since we only desided to start collecting Imperial Guard earlier today and havent orderd anything yet..
What about the Valkyrie? Seems like a nice model. Is it any usefull?
The Vendetta is either a conversion piece you will have to make, or a forgeworld model. I did mine by ordering up a bunch of lascannons from a bits website and throwing them on, didn't end up looking all that bad either. The psykers are quite nice because they come in packs of three, so if you get three packs you have your full squad there, and just sacrifice a guardsman, or if you wanna get special use an officer or something.
Valkyrie's and Vendettas are very fun to play with, but don't get too reliant, they will be targetted, and they will be shot down. The models are massive and are on about 6 inch tall stands. Oh, they are an absolute pain to transport as well.
Hope I helped out, and welcome to the Imperial Guard.

Welcome to the Guard, sign here, here, and here.
The first thing that you will need is a HQ unit. For small lists a Primaris Psyker is a popular choice, but it is hard to go wrong with the good old Company Command Squad. A command squad with 4 meltaguns and a Chimera will run around 145 points
The next thing you will need are two troop choices. For newbies, this is most easily done with a pair of veteran squads. These consist of 10 infantry ( a sergeant, 6 lasguns, and 3 special weapons of the same type). A veteran squad with 3 plasma guns and a chimera will clock in at about 170 points each or 155 packing meltaguns.
Those 3 should get you close to 500 points. That's enough to play with and give you an idea on where you want to expand your army.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
Thanks for all the replies, I shall take this information and discuss with my frind and then we will see what we order first ^_^
Vendettas are a variant of the Valkyrie that replaces the rocket pods and multilaser with three twinlinked lascannons. They tend to be more popular than the defaul Valkyrie, though you'll need to do a little kitbashing if you don't want to order the conversion kit from Forge World. The way I made mine was to order some lascannon bits from the Heavy Weapons teams off of Ebay, glue them together, and attach them to the wings. If you check Google, you'll likely find a few guides on how to do this. Send me a PM and I can give you more detailed instructions of how I did mine. The Vendetta still retains all the transport capabilities of the Valkyrie, just with a different weapons loadout. The Valkyrie tends to be less popular because it's primarily an anti-infantry vehicle, which is a role filled better by other units, especially the Hellhound. They're not bad, but it's hard to say no to three twin-linked lascannons on a fast skimmer.
The Imperial Guard has two psyker units in the codex. The first is the Primaris Psyker, a HQ independent character. The second is the Psyker Battle Squad, an elite choice that has a bunch of novice psykers working together to use powers. I'm not a fan of psykers myself, mainly for fluff reasons, but there are plenty of people who swear by them.
The lascannon sponsons from the Land Raider kit are a good bit to use for modelling TL lascannons on Vendettas.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
Aren´t the Razorback TL lascannons good for a Vendetta conversion? They even have a niche "case" already.
I am planning to do that because this way my Guard(Vendetta) and my Sisters(Rhinos) both benefit from it.
