Hello, I have recently decided to add a force of marines to my imperial forces. But I am not sure what chapter to paint them. I am thinking of inventing a new one but can't decide whether to make them an offshoot of the Dark Angels or the Ultramarines. I don't like ultramarines but their background (if you ignore the silly stuff that says they rule the universe and Marneus Calger eats Avatars for breakfast) fits in with the feel of my imperial forces.
I also can't decide what colours to use, I like blue (again ultramarines! I can't get away from them!) but red or dark green could look cool too. (Blood Angels are out as the army list is way too blaggy)
Thoughts, ideas suggestions would be most appreciated.
Why don't you try a successor chapter like sons of guilliman if you like blue but are against ultramarines, they have some good fluff too. Sons of Guilliman - Lexicanum
I personally check out the chapters from forgeworld and pick one I like from the fluff that they create, such as space sharks, etc. . . They even have their own resin models which look cool if they are leading your army. Hope that helped
then paint them blue you don`t have to paint Ultramarines crimson fist is also blue(and red:p) and when you start an new chapter start with choosing a color or two you want and build it from there. but if you like the Ultramarines background just take an underchapter to them.
personally I don`t like Ultramarines as much as before, they is to common.
Dark Angels have a pretty good storyline - and the new FAQ for them also has the perk of buffing their codex rather decently, too. I applaud of your decision to invent a chapter, by the way. I did the same with my guys, and I often get commentary about the sea of white plastic dudes. (See my avatar)
Well if you don't like them to be overly Ultramarines, and you would like to see red units on the table, perhaps the Sons of Orar are a good bet. Red and white colour scheme, and a little touch of mystery concerning their founding and the likes.
But there is no one stopping you from going for a DIY chapter. By all means, go ahead and do it. This allows you to come up with your own fluff and the likes.
Thanks for the help. I have invented the planet that my Guard are from, they are a very imperialistic world so it makes sense for me to have the space marine detachment there Ultramarines as they follow the Codex Astares most closely. I have to make them a successor chapter (1 because I hate what GW has done with them and 2 because they don't recruit from my new world.) I can just play around with the Blue colour scheme a bit till I get something I like. I also have no ab-humans in my Guard army. My ratlings will be normal snipers and Ogryns will be mechanical walkers. When I get round to buying and painting them I will post pictures for help/advice on colour scheme.
Brazen Claws... They are a vanilla marine chapter, blue and red, very challenging to paint as they are patterned half red/half blue on top and half blue/half red on the bottom. When done well they are a very sweet looking army on the field.
As for DA, I love DA fluff, have played DA since second, they were even my second army, but unless your planning on running DW or RW they are still very weak, even with the new FAQ. Pts wise, in an 1850 list of straight marines; no DW or RW, vs a Vanilla 1850, there is about 100pts more Vanilla than what your can get DA. And fluff wise, if you read all the DA novels you start to question whether the Fallen really were the traitors or not...
Just my two cents. Hope it helps.
