    Space Marine Tournament Performance

A number of years ago I played Mech IG and Space Marines quite avidly and competitively, but I sold my armies and took a hiatus from the game because of school, then job, kids, etc.

I was looking to get back into the hobby but I was unsure if Marines can actually compete at official GW events at the moment and what the most competitive marine lists look like.

Just by trolling the army lists forum it seems to be a mech force with lots of razorbacks?

Can marines beat a well crafted IG or Tyranid force at the tourney level? When I last played about 5 years ago, mech IG shredded marines- has that changed?

Nids are rather on the weak side. IG's still the most breakable codex, especially at higher point levels...though there's some very solid possibilities around for Marine players of the various chapters as well.

Mech and Melta are the big things, currently. Light tank spam is pretty well everywhere, so it's something to adapt to and keep in mind.

Space marines are still very effective on the tabletop as long as your list has a balance between anti mech and anti horde.
Finding that balance can be a bit tricky sometimes though.
Nowadays all units need to be meched up and fast moving units are key elements in your list. So yes, for marines that means razorbacks and rhino's
IG still has massed firepower and allow for very competitive builds. This doesn't mean that they can't be beaten though.

Why are mech marine light tank armies more competitive now than they used to be? Is it because rhinos are cheaper?

How could a mech marine army ever beat a mech IG army?

Due to the change in rules for 5th edition, all vehicles are better than they were. Mech marine is all BS4, so that's the sole advantage over IG.

Tanks are more durable, basic rhinos are 15 points cheaper, razorbacks are 30 points cheaper, chimeras are 30 points cheaper and much better.
Low AP weapons are more common and cheaper now too, and close combat more decisive so it's useful for squads to hide in/behind transports.

Most important rules changes are as follows:

    1) Vehicle damage table was changed -> Vehicles are harder to kill than before
    2) Sweeping Advance in close-combat -> Pretty much everyone EXCEPT marines die (like really dead) if they ever lose a round of combat
    3) Objectives -> Can ONLY be taken and kept by Troop type units now

With these in mind the advantages Mech Marines have over Mech Guard are:

    1) BS4 is better than BS3
    2) Mech Marines can instakill stuff by assaulting it. Mech Guard can die if they ever assault anything except Tau or Grots
    3) Marine troops can sit on objective, get assaulted and live to tell the tale. Mech Guard troops can sit on objective, get assaulted and die to last man in one round.

In a Mech SM list you will see that EVERYTHING has BS4. Even the vehicles themselves.
