What's the deal with Whirlwind tanks? I hear constantly that they're great against Tau, but why? Is it just because they're ultra-cheap AND have an ordnance blast weapon?
Whirlwinds are cheap, and you don't need LOS to use one. They're amazing for thining squads down before they hit your front lines, especially against Orks and Nids.
The only drawback to the Whirlwind is getting used to guess range. Once you've got that down, it becomes a great part of your arsenal. The actual weapon isn't that powerful, so I wouldn't recomend taking it when you have alot of tanks to deal with, but I've successfully used it against Chaos, it's great for huge mobs of Khorn Berzerkers, and it's really great against charging mobs of IG.
Ahh, the LOS thing. Forgot about that, I understand now. Thanks!
against horde armies it's a great weapion as it can easilt deal with them, the fact that you don't need LoS means it has a much higher chance of surviving the battle and the fact that it is cheap also means it doesn't cut into your forces
They AREN'T reputed to be all that good. In fact, they are a very one sided weapon. They are great against horde armies, but they really suck against marines because of their low AP value.
As a SM player, I don't even bother worrying about one if I see it, and as an IG player, I just drop a basilisk shell on it the first turn of the game if the SM player brings one.
Nothing in the game beats the basilisk for IF.
Actually, I've had some success with my whirlwind against Chaos marines quite a few times. Even though it has shitty AP, they're still going to fail to save a third of the time, so it isn't really that bad. If you mass your fire on one squad at a time, you can usually come up with some good effects.
Against anything that doesn't have power armor, I usualy take 2 with a predator loaded up with multi-shot weapons. Against anything with power armor I don't bother.

I've made a comparison to the Witch hunters Exorcist, and here,s what I found:
1 hit only
quite high points
good against armor
excellent choise in the army
ord. 1 blast
good against light armored, mobbed infantry
better choises are available, but ok for it's cost
ofcourse they are 'diffrent' vehicles in diffrent armies, and I don't think a whirlwind is as much a must have as an exorcist is for the witch hunters. yeah, it is nice against mobs as is said before, but it's not an outstanding weapon...
"I have died a thousand deaths, and I will die a million more..."
I think that if you compare the potential of the whirlwind with it's points cost, it is a great deal. I used to always take at least one in my army, but have not used a whirlwind in quite a while. I'm thinking about giving them a try again. The best thing about them is when facing power armored enemies, they usually don't care about it since the AP won't go right through their armor. Let me tell you it is quite humbling to have half a marine squad dead and pinned from a single whirlwind. They're also great for taking out entire squads of howling banshees in one turn(yep, that's personal experience).
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!
