I noticed BT had an update and im looking at starting a non popular army. Would it be worth it to go with BT? Are they competitive at all now? Should I just wait for grey knights to come out in april and go with them?
I am more of a CC type of person. Any infomation would be greatly appreciated!
Well, if you're looking to start a non-popular army, then Grey Knights are not what you're looking for. Everyone and their mother, possibly even myself, is going to be getting at least a small force of them. As for how competitive the Black Templars are, they were worth it before the update. Was some of their stuff over-costed or superseded by new, better equipment? Yes. Did they bring abilities to the table top that are unique to them? Yes. Fighting with the BT was a bit of an uphill battle, but not much of one. This really just brings them back into parity with some of the other codices. I can't say that I am super familiar with them, but I have fought against them several times. There were times that I lost, and there were times that I won, but they are always fun to play against and, I at least imagine, are fun to play with.
Now with the new FAQ, BT is brought up to standard of vanilla marines which has greatly increased their effectiveness.
They have their own playstyle and their own characteristics but they are worth it IMO.
and if you want CC, BT is more geared towards that then vanilla marines, so they might very well be worth it for you.
Nobody does cheap typhoon and las/plas marine spam better than templars though, and their terminators are no slouches. They are certainly different.
BT's have their own playstyle and it can be quite hard to master it at first but it becomes very rewarding once you get the hang of it. no libby's, but you get other units that can be very effective. And the look of them on the table is awesome too.
I actually started with them because of their fluff. I mean, they were formed from the most hardline marines back in the day, so...
Their terminators are some of the best, IMO. 2 Cyclone launchers in a 5 man squad, all of them with tank hunters for 265 points. It's a firebase that's pretty hard to match.
At the very least, go and buy a copy of the codex, and give it a read through. They've got a lot of the old rules for a bunch of stuff, which is both good and bad in different ways. Once you learn to master the army though, you'll find that it's quite solid.
Plus, they have an epic paintjob if you should decide to make use of it.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
I do have to admit that I've neglected my Iron Knights a bit, but with the FAQ, they're sure to see some more action now.
