I'm just starting out in 40K and kind of have a unique situation here. I will be playing games with a friend of mine who has jumped into this with me. We have set the point limit to 1000 while we learn o play. We figured this would give us sufficient room to try out enough different units without making the games too long at first. First thing i did was purchase the SM codex, WH 40K rulebook and SM battleforce. I also picked up a commander and a Razorback with this in mind for the force (base cost).
Captian w/ 5-man combat squad and Razorback - 230
10-man tactical squad w/ rhino - 205
5-man assault Squad - 100
5-man scout squad 70
This gives me 605 base cost with plenty points to spare for upgrades. While searching for ways to fill out the army i had a friend who plays give me another 5-man assault squad and a jump pack chaplain because he's changed his mind about expanding his assault force. I know, lucky me right? So now i'm looking at the above plus
5- additional jump assault marines - 90
1- jump chaplain - 115
This brings the total to 810 base cost with all the models i have and 190 points for upgrades. This is where i'm having decision issues. Do i ditch the captain, pick up 5 more tactical marines to make a second 10-man, and build the razorback as a rhino to tote them around? Ditch the chaplain and run the assault force alone? Ditch one of the HQ and 5-man tac and pick up some heavy support? As i have yet to play, i'm unsure if its going to be suicide to run with no heavy support. I know my friend will be running Chaos Marines with a 10-man heavy support and a 5-man terminator squad. I'm not looking to tailor this army to be a Chaos-beater, just looking for advise to balance out the force so it has survivability while we're both learning the ropes of the game. Any help on troop choices and loadout would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Also, i was unsure if i was supposed to post this here or in an army list thread cause its kind of a unique situation i'm in having most of the models already. I apologize if i posted in the wrong place.
You've 190 points spare, that's plenty to round out your force - personally I think your setup is good as it is, although I'd aim to get 5 more assault marines when you move up to the next level.
For support purposes i would go for 2 land speeder tornadoes, they have a lovely amount of kick and can deal with both target types. Sure they're not heavy support but they do a similar job
I'm probably gonna see how i like the assault squads before i think about expanding them. More tac marines will definitely be on my list when i start to expand. The speeders sound like a great choice and i'm going to definitely look into them. Right now i'm considering how to loadout the troops so that i can play with what i have.
10-man tac - ML/Flamer Sarg w/PF? transported in rhino
5-man tac & Captain w/PW? transported in razorback
10-man assault 1xPP PF on Sarg and jump chaplain goes with them
Upgrades for transports?
with only 1 1/2 tac squads and an assault squad i'm having trouble deciding how to outfit them. I'm guessing the 10-man Tac will be holding objectives and the assault squad will be, well, assaulting. What should i aim for with the Captain and his squad. I think it will be hard to specialize units in this small force. Just trying to think of a loadout that will optimize what i have right now and i can specialize units as i expand my army.
