as a space wolf player im a big fan of wolf scouts, I usually take a least 2 packs, one with meltas, power weapons, and MotW, and the other with sniper rifles for accurate, wound whatever the hell i want on a 4+. Im wondering if there is a better combo out there, or if there is a good reason to leave them with their bolters on.
I generally run 2 packs, with a meltagun and a Wolf Guard with a combi-melta. If I've got a ton of extra points, I'll throw in for plasma pistols as well. I use them to get behind the enemy and mess them up some.
I generally run the same thing as watchwood. They're amazing for taking down russ' that are hammering your lines.
I recently got in behind a Taught command squad that was hammering on my advancing grey hunters. After meltas and charging the squad was pretty much gone. The 12" threat range they pose sure makes your opponent think where he Parks his fire support. I have yet to use my wolf scouts as snipers because they are so effective with meltas and charging.
I usually one squad of Space Wolf Scouts with one melta gun, 2 power weapons, and a Wolf Guard with a power fist and combi-melta. Sometimes I run two identical squads and now I sometimes add a Wolf Guard Battle Leader with twin Wolf Claws and Saga of the Hunter so he can outflank.
I don't like the sniper rifles, so I would not use them.
