I was thinking about ways of keeping an army's leadership alive, and one idea that popped into my head was to keep the command squad inside of a chimera, and hiding the chimera behind a suitable terrain feature. While this wouldn't be practical in small games, in a larger game, the chimera would essentially be invulnerable (except against indirect basilisks and such) and your leadership is pretty safe. Combine that with voxes and you have the equivalent of a command bunker.
Now, my question is whether or not an officer can still use the leadership special rule if he's hunkered in a chimera rather than standing out in the open like an idiot. The codex doesn't say, and the Guard FAQ doesn't say either.

I think it would but, what was the point of the salamander command tank? Was it meant for the same idea?

Leadership ability? I'd say "no". Leadership says "12" from officer." when the officer is in the chimera he's not on the board.
Master Vox? of course. the dex/faq says that the Vox systems works from anywhere.
keeping the command squad out of LOS in a chimera? yeah i've considered this, but i don't like the idea of having a chimera not fighting :hmm:
my chimeras run ~100 points. granted you could use a tooled down chimera for this roll, but it'd still run ~85 points. i don't want 85points of my army to be in a pascifist role. even if it is for a good cause ^_^
but if you *really* want your command squad surviving, and barring High Strenght Indirect enemy fire, then hiding them in a chimera is a viable option.
Vox works from anywhere? Even off the board, so the commander could be in reserves and you could have the rest of the army out with his Ld?
Every whisper of the future from the Warp speaks of a hundred battles lost, a thousand lives devoured and a million enemies born. -- Inquisitor Lord Babel
Yes, even when the commander of the army is in reserve, his Leadership is still used when there are vox casters in the army.
I think that this would be a good idea, in a game of 1500pts+. In games smaller than that, I think that the 75 odd points spent on a "command bunker" could be better used elsewhere. You could get 18 conscripts for those points! *Grins*...***
Well thinking logically I believe that his presence inspires the troops to greater deeds of valour so he can't inspire them if they can't see him. The Vox could still work yes. I think though that should he decide to pop his head out the hatch he can gain his Ld inspiration thingy. Although the vehicle counts as open topped anyone agree?
