OK, so they are kind of iconic and cool. And I've used in my last 2 battles as they were painted and my Vulkan conversion and 6 man razorback squad wasn't yet, but I'm thinking of ditching them.
Or am I being hard on them because Karandhras and a scorpion squad killed them all before falling to 2 tactical termies?
How popular are they?
They're a great, versitile unit. The problem is that you gotta buy a Captain to get them.
I tend to set mine up for shootyness - either 2xFlamers/2xMeltaguns, or 4x Plasam Rifles. Cheap, cost effective unit of fire support.
It might be that they mine aren't optimised for a particular role. They are the guys from the box.
Apoth, standard, champ, fist and flamer. Included because they were painted to bring up the total to 2000 points more than for a specific role.
Pretty good at clearing my lines, but didn't impress me as much as either terminator squad.
Ah sure I might give them another few tries before deciding
Well, let's be fair here... Karandras is serious business in CC. On the charge, the dude can dish either an incredible amount of attacks, or a whole bunch of power fist punches. Either way, dude is gonna kill something. Short of really spending some points to get a CC squad, he's gonna win a lot of fights in CC against most units. Throw in a squad of scorpions and you have what any sort of MEQ unit struggles with, and that is a great volume of attacks at decent strength. They might not be able to punch through armor saves like Banshees can, but they can definitely bury you with volume.
I definitely think Watchwood's got it right. Gear em up with a good amount of shootiness and maybe drop pod them onto something expensive.

i only used them once and in that 1 game they and the captain get destroy by a 2 mawlocs before i had any chance to get them out of the way, i have not used them since. though, with vulkan hestan can you use a command squad?
