I personally love this new character. His fluff is epic, and the idea of "ghost terminators" is just plain awesome. but does this awesomeness translate into game terms? is he competitive at all?
From what I can see, the ghost terminators are the same as regular terminators except they are 8 points less and have the stealth rule. Granted, they disappear as soon as mordrak bites the dust, but he can't be picked out of the squad because he is essentially a serg. Plus, mordrak has 2+3++. Mordrak is 25 points more expensive than a grand master, comes with all of the perks, an mc hammer, and the ability to arrive first turn via deep strike every game. plus, every time he takes a wound a ghost appears (up to 3). IMO, this guy is a shoe in if you want to take a GM
Yes, he is a cool character. However Ghost Knights are 40 points each and Mordrak only has 2+5++. The only character that has the storm shield is Draigo. But it doesn't make him any less of an awesome character
Doesnt he have an iron halo? Maybe I'm wrong on those rules. As for the points cost, I was going off the leaked codex so it's prob wrong . and even if they are the same points cost, IMO they are better than normal termies. that's just me though.
Ahh yes, my mistake he does indeed have an Iron Halo.
If you want a scale of how coll this character is, I deep-struck him and 4 Ghost knights in front of 700 points of Dark Eldar, he got charged and held up every unit that charged him in combat for the entire game..
nice! I hope they make a model for him.
Yeah, I love Mordrak. That fact that he can Deep Strike first turn without scattering is phenomenal. And like everyone else said, he can take cheap terminators.
However, given how phenomenal the basic GM is, I'd almost rather take him and some Paladins in a SR. Crazy expensive, but probably one of the best all around units in the Codex (with the exception of the Purifiers).

I think he meant a regular GKGM. Who has a better invul (if you leave him with the basic sword) and the option to take Rad Grenades, iirc.
I am not, however, fond of Paladins. They're a deathstar who needs a delivery system, and that's either a Land Raider or Storm Raven - only one bad dice roll away from having to hoof it.

In all honesty, I don't really think having paladins advance on foot is too terrible. They can absorb tremendous amounts of damage and lay down some great firepower while they advance. There are pros and cons, it comes down to individual preference
However, back on topic! I am really loving Mordrak's potential since taking him is exactly the same points as a GM, 5 terminators + psycannon. He will most likely be present in about 50% of my lists for now on
If you were thinking of taking a unit of regular terminators and a GM then it seems sensible to take Mordrak and ghost terminators instead. You get an extra wound, attack and mastercrafted hammer for a small point increase and the ability to deepstrike turn one with no scatter. He is of course only I1 with his hammer but because he is a squad upgrade character rather than IC he cannot be picked out. You can also get a couple of free terminators show up as he takes wounds. If you miss the high initiative of a GM just take a few halberds in the retinue to compensate.
Disadvantages I suppose is that this unit counts as HQ rather than regular termies that can claim objectives. If the rest of your army is troop heavy then this is no problem and you can always use grand strategy to make more units scoring.
