hi my brother has just started spacemarines, we just bought the battle for macragge and he has his codex. right now he has the 11 guys that came with that plus 5 from the paint set. i dun know alot about ultramarines but i hear there real strat forward and boring is this true? and if not which chapters are more exctiting mind you my brither is only 11 years old. thanks for your help
Staright foreward, yes. Boring, no. The Ultramarines are the perfect model of a Space Marine. They wrote the book on how to be a Space Marine(literally!. Because they don't have any extra rules, they are good for beginners, and they also have many cool special character models, with more to come with the Macragge sets.
All in all, they're a great place to start 40k, I know, I did.
Good strategists seize opportunities, great ones make their own.
There is a new marine codex coming out next month (or somewhere around there) that will totally revamp the marines. Ultramarines are focused upon greatly in the new dex so they will probably get some new rules or at least a set of chapter traits similar to some of the IG regiments in that codex.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!
They will indeed be getting new rules for two new units they will be getting: Tyranic war Veterans and Honor Guard. Oooo.....exciting!

It's sort of how Coca Cola is the original, but you might want to drink Cuba Cola or Mecca Cola (authentic brands! :) just to be different.
Ok, that was maybe less than serious, but Ultramarines are anything but boring. They always had a rich history beginning in the Horus heresy and going through the first tyrannic war and forwards.
They are the foundation on which all other chapters build on, and therefore they don't have many special rules; the main rules were built for them.
