Well if your going to DS them then Vanguard vets, heroic intervention gets you out of the way of enemy guns straight into combat!
PROUD TO BE IN THE BRITISH ARMY.
~~ Surrender and serve me in life, or die and slave for me in death~~
Although I use them both myself I have to vote for Assault Marines. I only buy Vanguard Vets for the very special purpose of wielding multiple power-weapons, which is something you don't really need unless you are building a very assault oriented army in the first place... and then you probably have Assault Marines in the army, too. Although it has to be said that transporting a small squad of five power-weapon veterans inside a Land Raider is also a viable tactic.

Only take Vanguard in casual games. Or without jump packs and a nice transport. Too expensive with jump packs.
Vanguard are awesome, that one in three chance of getting that five man squad straight into combat with those backfield knits is awesome. Also when you consider that the average scatter is seven inches, it isn't that hard to get a charge off even if you scattered.
Finally if you play BA......
Assault Marines, cheaper and I have roughly the same results between the two types so I don't particularly notice much. Vanguard are kinda cool though; but if it ain't broke don't fix it and I like having extra things to play around with so I keep it simple and use plain assault marines.
That's the best way of finding out if they are for you
Me, personally I'd go assault marines every time. Jump pack vets even with HI are so shockingly overpriced.
I'd rather have 10 assault marines with a fist and twin melta/flamer. It's probably cheaper, more attacks (and combat squadding) able to kill tanks nicely, far more resiliant (what's the difference when hit by power weapons / MC / plasma / AP 3 or better ? nothing. you're dead on the same roll, but one was double the cost. What happens when hit by a bucket of dice in shooting/melee? I'd still take the assault marines every time.)
It does raise the valid point of what's more important to you, elites or fast attack? assault marines win again.
