What are some good builds for the plain Space Marine Dreadnaught. Not the Venerable or the Ironclad, just the plain old-fashioned dreadnaught.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
I've had quite a lot of success with Assault Cannon, Dreadnought CCW (w/stormbolter) and Drop Pod. Its not a dakkanought or anything, but the Assault Cannon packs enough rending shots to be a threat to anything and DCCW makes the dreaddy 'good enough' in assaults. Drop Pod is naturally there to make sure you get the dreddy where you want or need it without any extra hassle.

I am a big fan of the fairly basic Multi-Melta/Heavy Flamer combo, especially as it is not uncommon for me to run Vulkan as well. This build greatly benefits from the use of a drop pod, but with enough target saturation they can often make it across the board relatively intact. It has a potent anti-tank weapon, a potent anti-infantry weapon, and can get stuck in against a number of enemies and grind them down. I love my dreads so much that I have 6 of them in a Vanilla list. Although I will admit that Polaria's build is indeed a good one. But I feel that it is less of a stand alone build as it is a support build because it lacks the anti-tank oomph the Multi-Melta has
I tend to use lascannon and ccw with heavy flamer, plus extra armour.
I pick a range for mine to work at, and build the guns for that.
Long Range: AutoCannon/Assault Cannon
Short Range: Melta/Heavy Flamer (has to have a drop pod or storm raven else it's a waste of time)
Umm forgive me for being cliche, but I'm a fan on 2x Twin-linked Autocannon 'Rifleman' Dread - pop transports any day of the week. If I'm looing for an anti-armour save gun platform, however, I'll go for the TL-Las and Missile Launcher build; since a shooty dreadnought of this style won't be moving from the back end much, the CCW isn't as much of a loss, contrary to usual approach regarding missiles on Dreadnoughts, since you won't find loads of people taking them.
I want to build a pair of the Riflemen dreads as I love the look of the old Mortis pattern dreadnought, but for the two I've got at the moment I have a Dreadnought with with Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer, and a Venerable Dreadnought with CCW and Storm Bolter and swapable Las/Plasma/Assault Cannons depending on what I want to roll with on the day.
I have to say I really don't see the point of a CCW or short ranged weapon on a dread with a long ranged gun. You can fire two guns, why would you pick on that'll be out of range if you're doing it right?
