i was wondering , what should i take in a heavy weapons squad, i lack anti tank, (only 1 lascannon), and have a lot of anti infantry (basilisk, leman russ etc). i am less inclined to take the heavy bolters as i frequently find myself up against marines, and chaos marines etc. any advice would be appreciated
well if you lack anti-tank then i'd recommend more lascannons, the basilisk and leman russ aren't bad at taking out tanks either though as they are ordnance weapons and high enough strength to hurt any tank. other than that, i'd recommend autocannons as it wounds most enemy's on 2+, or a 3+, less shots but they can take out light armour and MC quite effectively, HB are useful for horde armies like orks or nids. but even then they work on the standard troops choices.
EDIT: Beat me to it
Autocannons are great for clipping any rhinos, stopping their movement or outright destroying them. Heavy bolters are trash imo. They lack the punch to do much against armoured targets but likewise their modest AP is useless against heavy infantry.
Copy, Improve, Innovate
thanks everybody, i shall defiantly choose auto cannons due to your advice, although, i may get a few heavy bolters for my upcoming trench warfare project (more on that later)
not really no, as i found that the cost of raising a kreig army, on top of the effort and costs of making the trenches themselves would be too much
Heavy Bolters are crap (I have 8 sitting on the shelf myself). They neither penetrate Marine armor, nor wound them on 2's. So S6/7 weapons with cheap or multiple shots (multi-lasers, grenade launchers, autocannons) are your best friend. The idea is to pour so many wounds into a Marine squad that he'll still die even when he makes 2/3rds or his saves.
Heavy flamers (on vehicles) are gold here too. They don't auto-penetrate Marine armor, but they're good for 5-8 hits on a squad (1-2 dead Marines). Which is more than a single heavy bolter will do for you all game long.
