Has anyone noticed just how expensive these guys are?
1 wolf guard termie w/ thunder hammer and storm shield comes in at 63 pts while vanilla marines get a similar unit for 40pts
Long story short, why is this cause Thierry special rules are not that good
Thanks for reading
Dont have the puppy codex in hand but i can assume from others i do have.
Its on the strength vs balance scalepace wolves have cheaper options in other areas of their codex that other chapters pay an arm and a leg for.
Plus arent you able to split the squad and have them act as squad leaders? No other space marine chapter can have a terminator with assault cannon in a tactical squad.
A vanilla chapter cant take a single terminator they come in either 5 or 10 man squads.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Technically SW can't take a single terminator either, you need to take at least 3 Wolf Guard but yes, they can be split off and lead other squads of Grey Hunters or Blood Claws and the like. They can also be individually upgraded to terminator armor so that might be where you're getting the single Terminator thing.
Yeah, just clarifying I meant on point to point bases for the terminator but I see the point with the squads separation to become squad leaders.
they also have very very customizable terminators (should you choose to put them all in that armor) that I wish my vanillas got. I look at wolf terminators almost on the point level of chaos terminators but with more options and a slight point increase to account for counter attack. In 4th, vanilla codex terminators were be able to take a special "veteran" skill for 3 points per model: tank hunters or furious charge, and black templars can still do this.
Then I realize how space wolves get almost everything else on the cheap compared to vanilla and I wonder how wolf guard in terminator armor became priced so appropriately.
Then consider how you can separate the wolf guard to join other units. You can make them the "sergeants" of grey hunters, much like the sergeant of a space marine tactical squad, except that a single wolf guard model in power armor with power fist and combi-weapon is about 18 points cheaper than the vanilla sergeant equipped the same way. *THAT* pisses me off. Our superior TH/SH assault terminators are one of the only things Vanilla has over any other space marine codex and only barely at that (discounting DA and BT which is practically vanilla as far as TH/SH goes in practical terms). We do also get twin linked melta and flamers if you go salamander, which is just cheese and a bit broken but whatever.

Thanks guthbrand that's some good points there I guess they are worth the extra points
As for the "why" of the pointcost: I'm pretty sure they didn't look over at the Vanilla dex and try to coast Wolf Guard to Vanilla Termies. They just made wolf guard at x points, with termie armour at y points, and storm shields cost z points and hammers cost w points. So the question isn't so much "why Wolf Guard are so expensive", it's "why are vanilla marines so cheap".
