It's very obvious to anyone frequenting forums, reading fanfics and overall just dealing with people that play 40K (which I don't technically do at the moment) that the Ultramarines get a lot of slack. So, why all the hatred? Is it connected to a certain 5th edition codex author, or do people just dislike smurfs for another reason? :p
It's mostly because of Matt Ward - I think that if they'd just called in Codex: Ultramarines instead, then a lot of people would have forgiven him for the raging hardon he clearly has for them.
It's not just Ward - they were originally one of the loyalist chapters but no more special than any of the others.
Now the fluff says they had 50938593850934583094536863 marines survive the heresy and formed something like half of the 2nd founding chapters and they are EVERYWHERE. Plus they're kind of arsey and if you don't follow the rule book then you can GTFO.
might i just say, ^ here here
I guess GW wanted to standardize the Space Marines. Too bad they retconned the lore in a hamfisted way. I actually thought the 4th edition DIY chapter rules were pretty fun, from what I've read.
Why is the sky blue?
On a serious note, read the spacemarine codex fluff and you will get the hang of it.The second worst in fluff been grey knights and then blood angels.
And possibly the new necrons.Coinsidence?
Might want to check this out: Ultramarines - 1d4chan
A bit humourus but true!
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Ultramarines were a damn great chapter once. Full of nice characters, full of drama and tension and a proud history of both victories and defeats.
Then Mat Ward touched them.
Revenant Moon Necrons: (W/L/D) 0/1/0 (6th edition: 13/2/2)(5th edition: 14/6/4)(3rd edition Codex: 16/4/7)
XIX Legion: (W/L/D) 0/0/0 (5th edition: 14/12/2)(5th edition Codex: 4/3/0)
Black Legion: (W/L/D) 1/0/0 (6th edition: 2/3/0)
Something Wicked... Reikwald Beastmen: (W/L/D) 10/4/1
Ugh. Just read the Ultramarines Omnibus. It proves, on many occasions, that the Ultramarines are, for the most part, ignorant bigots who are so obsessed with following their rulebook that it destroys the imagination and initiative of their leaders and creates an army of look-a-like space marines who all do the same thing in every situation. While condemning those chapters that have deviated from the codex astartes as heretics.
Tau Empire: We never stop hiding from you
Dont worry about it. Everything will change in a few years, and then change again a few more after that. GW cannon will bend like reeds in the wind, or metamorphosise into something completely new to suit the sales dept.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
