Right, so i have a blood angels army of reasonable size, about 5000 pts. And i am looking to create a Baal themed imperial guard army. The basic idea is that this is the defines force that would-be left on planet while the blood angels were out killing stuff. This particular group that i would be making are part of a firesweep that they have sent out into the deserts to keep the. Utant population down. Because of this they are equipped with 'total destruction'weapons. I.e. Flamers, meltas and the demolisher cannons. The whole army would be mounted ni a vehicle as they wouod be speeding across the desert plains
The army would be lead by a commander hand picked by the space marines, who would be a lord commissar count as. There would no half humans or pyskers as this is sort of a purge the unclean type of army.elites would be storm troopers, the ones who had been on this sort of mission before, troops would be veterans in chimaeras, armed with three meltas or flamers. Fast attack would be bane wolfs as they are that sort of mass destruction purging thing that i am going for. Heavies would not include any artillery type things as they couldn't keep up, but would consist of demolishers to totally obliterate the unclean
What do you think? Any. Changes to any fluff or army make up?
First of all i dont know if Baal has any guard regimets(i believe no).But watever the case we can suppose the BA called in a few favours to equip them,
not with heavy ordance and baneblades though as you point out.
Second old imperial degree dictates that no spacemarine officer will lead imperial guard troops. The tried that before the HH and it ended up with the officers ordering
the guardsmen doing feats only a spacemarine could cope with, resulting into huge loses and low morale.
That order/reform was made before the HH by the big e himself if i remember rightly.
Edit:Now that i read it again,i thought i missunderstood the hand picked thingie. You mean that the commander is a human assigned by the BA right?
Well propably plausible since this is their homeworld.
Oh and one more thing...Are there still mutants on baal?Id think the chapter would have exterminated them by now.

Praise be to the Emperor!!
The army idea sounds competitive enough--standard mechanized list. But yeah, the fluff is problematic. Better to call them a Planetary Defense Force rather than a Guard regiment.
I don't think any Marine homeworlds produce Guard regiments at all. Most don't even have a PDF, frankly...who's going to invade a deathworld?
"My tanks have names, my men have numbers." -Col. Edmund Grahvess, 23rd Kronecker Prison Guard
Ultramar has a PDF.Depends on the way the chapter homeworld is run i guess.
EDIT:Now that i think of it why dont you make it such as that during the invsion Dante mobilised all forces available for the defense of the system?Perhaps after returning that damaged titan to the mechanicus, they decide to pay back by sending a ship full of goodies and Dante uses them to hastily equip a PDF to support the BA.

Right, thanks for the feedback.
So I am going to make it a Planetary defence force as this does sound more plausible. On that note, i think i remember that the ultramarine home world was assaulted by tyranids, did the PDF not fight in that battle? Is it not in the apocolypse rulebook?
Yes pilot, you are right about the leader being human, he is just picked by the space marines as they know that most of them will be off planet at any given time so. They need someone to hold base.
Mmh, about the mutants, i had just assumed that they wouldn't be able to wipe out every single one without resorting to huge bombings, which. They wouldn't want to do to their home planet. I thought hat they would conduct regular fire-sweeps so that the population could not rise up like it has done before.do you have a better idea why they would be equipped with these weapons ? Maybe they just use them as part of tradition, because their ancestors fought with them against the mutants.
Finally, intrepid, i don't really think that anyone would assault baal because of it's strategic value but because it is a space marine home world.
Edit, a bit of cross posting withnthe above but you get the picture
The PDF of Macragge did indeed fight but they died before the first company died.
Its in the codex ulta..sorry space marines.
My interpetation of the lines of the codexes fluff would be that sanquinius destroyed the mutants before the emperor arrived.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
It is decided. This is the regiment of the PDF who carry these weapons as part of their doctrine. They created them so that if their ever was something like a mutant rising then they would be prepared. They are lead by their hand picked commander and basically only fight in the Baal system. I am posting the army list inn the forum and would like is you could comment it.
Baal is a death world, the people are savages and probably a lot of them are borderline mutants. I don't think they'd have a formal standing army and the presence of the Blood Angles means it's not as necessary as on other worlds.
However, it's not unthinkable that there could be, say, an Orc invasion of sufficient size that a PDF draft would be needed. I think the PDF should be feral themed though. It would be like a militia of locals trained and equipped by the Blood Angels. Maybe you could try using maybe some Vampire Counts zombie and ghoul models and stuff?
It would give you a really awesome theme for the army (Blood Angels ARE Space Vampires after all!)
You could use the Renegades list off the Forgeworld site. It allows you to add in Alpha Legion as elites which would let you include Blood Angels into the mix. The background would be that the alien race of your pick has invaded Baal and the Blood Angels are pissed off and have rallied the planet's population to help them get their revenge!
Copy, Improve, Innovate
I'd echo Korona's suggestion: If you're looking for a different kind of guard list for fluff, definitely try one of the Forgeworld ones: Either the straight up Renegades list, or in Imperial Armour Vol 6: Siege of Vraks 2, or Imperial Armour Vol 7: Siege of Vraks 3.
For a Blood Angels esque Guard force, you could pick up a copy of IA6, as it's a Khorne based list you could EASILY use for a BA pdf force. Ask at your local GW if they have a copy you can have a quick look at first so you know it's for you.
For a HQ you could use the 'exalted champion', and use him to represent a hand picked human who's been given modifications by the BA.
In the troops section, as well as the regular platoon and armoured fist squad, you can field 'beastmen attack squads', which you could easily change to be humans who've become nocturnal and and feral after years on Baal.
For fast attack, as well as sentinals and hellhounds, there's a kind of warhound entry, which I'm sure you could switch to something that fits in too. Werewolf's and a handler that patrol BA fortresses or something.
So you can use everything in your opening post (Vets, hellhound/bane wolf, demolishers), but could add one or two extra bits to make it even more fluffy.
And if you're not playing competitively, you could ask your friends if you can use a BA assault squad instead of Khorne Bezerkers if you wanted.
