Is it worthwhile giving my Storm Trooper Veteran a Plasma pistol ?
I only ask because the model is holding one.
Depends what you're doing with him. I don't like risking the overheat on a character of any kind, especially not for a 12" shot. I think they're better with bolt pistols/power weapon (for CC guys) or combi-meltas (for armor hunting).
Easy to mod them though - just chop the hand off at the wrist, put whatever you want in it's place. Or just cut off the pistol barrel, leaving it's grip, and do whatever afterwards.
I'll start off with the Plasma pistol and see how it goes , he has another weapon slung infront of him looks like a Bolter of some sort so I could use that instead , but the Plasma Gets hot danger might be a bit of fun if nothing else.
A plasma pistol is good on a cheap footsoldier because of its high strength (7) and its AP2. The risk of overheat will be there, but nowhere near as high as a rapid fire plasma gun, plus remember that you can still take your save against the wound.
I'd say the risk is definitely worth it on cheap guys like Stormtroopers who have a decent save to boot. Of course you would have to try it out and see if it fits your style.

a plasma pistol is crap on a vet sarge. the range is way to short, cut it off and give him a ccw or somthing, seeing as how you already have a bolter. btw, i think a plasma gun is FAR superior to a pistol, and who rapid fires them anyhow?
their not bad, they points cost is not cheap, but if you planning on marching forward and shooting, its nice to have a bit of ap or the possibility of tank hunting, tank pending

usually you wont be rapidfiring the pistol anyways. and he is BS4 and it's not like you'll loose any Ld if he dies (they're all 8s).
but personally i don't think they're worth it, but that's just me... and if you go up against alot of MEQ then you'll be glad you have another BS4 plasmashot in your army!
the only thing i don't like about that model (is it the old SS model with the bolter and PP?) is that he doesn't have a ccw on him! if you keep the PP then for sure strap a chainsword on his back!
I use a plasma pistol on my storm vet, with plasma guns or melta guns in the squad. I rapid fire because my stormtroopers arn't for assault usually. Close combat is for my grey knights. My st's have more specific roles. The risk from overheating are minimal, besides as been said they have a save, and if they die theyr'e a STORMTROOPER.

it's funny that in GK armies, SS are the "cheap throw-away unit"... but in a IG army SS are your Elites!

Well, if you could give the vet a plasmagun, I'd suggest it to have 6 S7 AP2 shots, but you can only have 5... chances are though, that's 2-4 dead marines/GKs/anything-without-an-invunerable-save. A turn, no less, once you leap out of a chimera/rhino that also shoots and all within 12".
