Hi folks, I've got a quick question for you.
I've been tooling around with list buidling for a while and I haven't seen generic rules of thumb for what your list should contain.
I know there is the minimum of 1 HQ and 2 troops for the FOC, but what about how many troop choices you should have at 500pts, 1000pts, 1500pts, etc.
Perhaps someone with more experience would be able to point me in the right direction? Thanks!
My specific problem is if I have a list at 500pts and I want to build it up to 750-1000 pts, I don't particularly want to start over, but I have trouble fitting in those last few units to maximize the effectiveness of the list.

My general rule for IG troops is one durable scoring unit per 500 points, plus one.
I define "durable" as any unit in a Chimera or a blob of at least 20 regular infantry that's not intended to be sacrificed for blocking assaulters.
I try to use mounted veteran squads (chimeras or vendettas) and support choices in equal number.
For example in my 1750 list I have 3 chimera vet squads and 2 vendetta vet squads, so 5 mounted vet squads. I also use a squad of sentinels, a mounted command squad, two leman russes, and a mounted psyker battle squad. So I have 5 scoring troops units mounted up and 5 units to support them.

Depends on your playing style. My footsloggers can have as few as four scoring units in a 2,000 point game and still do just fine. I simply hold one objective and deny all others...it's quite doable if you bring enough Russes and Hellhounds.
For 1,000 points, I'd field two 20-man squads, two Platoon Command squads in Chimeras, a Company Command squad and a vehicle or two...something like that, customized to taste. You could also look through the Army Lists subforum for inspiration.

Personally, my stance is similar to Sandwyrm, however, I say two scoring units per 500. A Platoon + veteran squad is enough for me at 1000. A platoon + extra line squad + 2 Veteran squads is my standard scoring unit loadout at 1500.
It usually works out to be almost precisely the same in the end.
I typed up some of my general list-building ideas for IG a couple years ago in the Tactica forum. Maybe it can help you out.
