Hey guys,I've been thinking about making some fluff to go along with my army and have a question on the composition of my battle companie's. I know a codex battle company is supposed to be 6 tactical squads 2 assault squads and 2 devastator squads. Would it be too crazy to say my chapter's battle companies are comprised of 6 bike squads 2 assault squads and 2 devastator squads.
1750 Ash Wolves (Ex-Traitor Marines) W/L/D 9/0/1
1750 Bad Moons (Orks) W/L/D 15/3/2
But, as far as I know, most bike squads are comprised of assault marines. When you have a full company of bikes, it is generally all squads from the 8th company. Some keep using them even after they graduate from being assault marines:
"A few Chapters take this further, with every Space Marine
required to maintain his mounted training, even though he
may have long passed into the 1st Company, or perhaps even
into the exalted ranks of the Chapter Council. Few Chapters
exemplify this better than the White Scars, who proudly
employ Bike Squads as the main body of any strike force."
-CM pg 68
So yeah, I think it's within the fluff to say that your tac squads continue to use bikes even after they enter into the primary battle companies.
There's a fair bit of leniency in what you can do with a custom chapter - mine runs a second company equipped with scout armour, owing to chronic materiel shortages and some disputes with the mechanicus.
