    500pt starting force

hey guys, what's up. I'm starting a Space Marines force and I want to start small. Here it is.

    Captain-140pts
    -terminator armour

    Tactical Squad A-180pts
    -plasma gun, missile launcher

    Tactical Squad B-180pts
    -plasma gun, missile launcher

    TOTAL-500pts

So I've a simple strategy in mind- mow down light infantry with bolters and take down the heavy stuff with plasma and missile launchers. When the enemy force is dwindled down I rush them and my Captain supports which ever unit. What do you guys think?

Not bad...but not fantastic, either. Captains are a bit of a waste of points, especially a captain in Terminator armour. At the very least, sub him for a Librarian. (Null Zone and Avenger are generally considered the best pair of powers)

On the other hand, if you want to SCARE the vast majority of 500 point armies, try this Space Wolf list out for size:
Rune Priest (Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane)
    5 Grey Hunters, Plasmagun
    5 Grey Hunters, Plasmagun
    Vindicator
    Vindicator

Vindicators are good against everything - a bit fragile at higher point levels, but more then enough for your needs at 500 points. I also suggest painting up your army as a custom chapter of some sort, that way you can swap between codexes pretty much at will.

Or, try this to give them the shakes. Ineffective, but scary as hell to see on the table at 500 points.

    Captain - xxx

    Scouts X 5 - 75
    CCWs

    Scouts X 5 - 75
Whatever free weapons, Snipers on home objective is what I usually do.

    Land raider - xxx

    500 exactly.

Captain with CCW scouts in raider. Other scouts on home objective. Funny.

If you want to scary you opponent/beat them really badly, then I would recommend one of the above lists.

However, if you`re looking to build a reasonable army that will do well against other reasonable armies, you could stick with your original army but replace the captain in termy armour with a librarian, and use the extra point for a rhino or drop pod for one of the tactical squads. Or you could give your librarian a jump pack and a plasma pistol or other wargear.

Land raider in a 500pt game? Not saying that it couldn't be done, and if it was a WAAC tournie, but otherwise... Different groups, I suppose.

For 500 points I would recommend a cheap HQ, like a chaplain or librarian, since they come with a power weapon for free, and then a full 10 man squad of marines and a 5 man squad of sniper scouts. Then you'll have extra points for if you want to take an assault squad (if you put them in a rhino your HQ can join them, though you may never use them again) or something like an attack bike or dreadnought or speeders or something.

Basically, if you're only playing 500 points, many small, cheap units is more fun than fewer, more expensive units. More stuff to play with, more things to move around. If you have a 1500 or 2000 point list as a goal to grow into, then you can be sure to design your 500 point list so that you're not making "wasted models".

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Best forum feedback I've gotten. I probably should go with the librarian but I don't care for the use of psychic powers. Hmm...the librarian is most beneficial though.

Master of the forge? He's surprisingly good, he can fix things, 2 extra S8 attacks, a free 2+ save - not bad in my opinion.
