Read the title. What henchmen (and how many) do you take?
My current retinue is (only) made up of 3 veterans with special weapons. It works against tanks and heavy infantry, but really S*** in cc. But so do all henchmen right? Anyway, waddya think?
Well it all depends on what kind of retinue you want. It either has to be all shooty or all cc to be effective. For a shooty retinue, the usual set up is a 1 mystic, 2 sages, and a couple of gun servitors: 2 plasma, or 1 plasma and 1 HB for killing troops, or 1 gun servitor with a multimelta and two veterans with a meltagun for tank busting(which I usually leave to my IST's) and giving your Inquisitor a psycannon is a must. If you want a CC retinue, you could go with a heirophant, a couple acolytes and some combat servitors, and of course tool up the Inquisitor for CC as well. Personally I prefer the shooty setup to the CC setup (we got the GK for that).

if you use a GK army, then you'd probably go shooty Inq in a rhino (to keep him from being shot). this is because GKs lack high str shooting.
if you use DH w/ IG. then you'd *probably* want a CC inq, because IG will provide *plenty* of firepower.
henchmen sucking? i wouldn't say that. they can help out alot, you just don't want to go overboard.
personally i like to keep my Inq Lord cheap
Lord w/ Thammer, BoltP, Icon of J, emperors tarot
Vet w/ flamer
Alco w/ storm shield
but there are MANY different ways to equip your Inq. read the tactica, it gives some good advice.
