I wanted to get your opinion on the formidable Medusa:
-Do you take Breacher Shells? (Why?)
-Do you take an enclosed crew compartment? (Why?)
-Do you prefer the Demolisher instead? (Why?)
My reason for asking is that I am currently working on a list with two Medusas in one squadron (my other heavy slots are filled).
What I really wanted was a high STR low AP blast to take out MEQ, TEQ and even transports.
At first I tried one Medusa and it was very effective, so I of course added another one
But with the squadron rules and Medusas being open topped, they will wreck on a +3 on the damage table (ouch!) so I made room for two enclosed crew compartments to compensate. But now I am thinking to my self "150 pts for enclosed medusas is very close to a Demolisher"
Since the Demolisher can move 6" and shoot, the medusa's range is really only 6" further, mounted on a fragile 12-10-10 hull compared to the Demolisher's awesome 14-13-11 hull.
So now I am thinking that the only reason to take Medusas over Demolishers would be 'cause they are cheaper. 30 points is after all ALOT of points. But once you put the enclosed compartment on the Medusa, its only 15 points difference which is not nearly as much.
But hold on... with the breacher shells you get added range, better AP, extra die on armor penetration, the option to move and shoot (yes! it is a heavy weapon, not ordinance) taking the Medusa's range up to an incredible 54 inches and a first turn threat in Dawn of War! Of course, you no longer have the large blast and the difference between 2 large blasts and 2 small is phenomenal ...
So what do you guys think?
I'm thinking for a Vanilla Medusa you need to run it single, without upgrades for cheap STR10 AP2
If your thinking about going for the enclosed compartment with the regular shells, I think you are better of with a Demolisher for mere 15 more points.
So squadroning Medusas is really tricky... you really need the enclosed crew compartment, making two Demolisher really a better option as discussed above and to take full advantage of the the squadron "extra armor" rule,
or you go with bastion breacher shells.

Medusa is ok for a gunline due to reduced cost. Once you start packing on upgrades, the scale tips back towards the Demolisher. For a mobile mech or hybrid force, the better choice is Demolisher.
Short answer is Demolisher. Improved durability and tactical flexibility are worth the extra points. The only place I can see a Medusa is in a static foot list to save points for more models.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
