So, unit of the week is the Storm Raven.
How do you use it? Assault Platform or Gunship? What weapon layouts? Do you attach a dreadnaught? Have you found the Mindstrike Missiles to be effective?
I will get the ball rolling... I have used Storm ravens in the past, I like to run with at least two if I am to use them at all. I find a TL Multi-melta is an auto-include as I like to be up in the face of the enemy first turn (Assault Platform). In saying that, I have found that if I do not have first turn they are hard to keep alive, hence the need for at least two. I find a Librarian on board with shrouding to up the cover saves given by moving flat-out is also great at upping the survivability. I find that the raven is a little to pricey to be used as a dedicated gunship, but has weapon options to make it quite lethal against almost any opponent. For example taking the TL Plasma cannon, and Typhoon launcher gives you a potential 7 small blast templates to be fired turn 1 (2 Frag rockets/4 Mindstrike Missiles/1 Plasma Blob). I am a fan of the Mindstrike Missiles simply because of what I have eliminated with them; Daemon Prince(CSM), Eldrad and Mephiston, these 3 in the 3 games I have used them.
I havent used them a lot but they are a great asset to the army if you can keep them alive long enough to actually do something. Their always a prioity target which then makes you not want to put anything in them - but then thats a big points sink for just a distraction on the battle field that can be killed by one well placed krak missle...
If you are going to take these things I believe you have to take more than one or put them in reserve and hope they come out when you need them to.
I use one in my army all the time. I have had great success with it, sure sometimes it gets shot down but not before it does it's damage. I run mine with twin linked melta and assault cannon, with Psi bolt ammo. Normally this setup allows me to nail to vehicles the turn my storm arrives, even if they are not destroyed you just want to stop them from shooting. I also use a teleport homer. Inside it always carries a squad of termies. I always keep it in reserve, and either deepstirke or come in from my edge. Deep striking my termies can still disenbark if needed, but due to termie armour they can survive the storm being shot down if still onboard. It should be said that this works well with my army compostition, I use servo skulls for increased accuracy when deep striking plus a purgation squad with teleport homer. I also use psychic communion to control when my reserves arrive. Mindstike are also great, never underestimate the ability to unleash all 4 missiles at once.
Mindstrike missiles rape other GK players!. with the new rules from the new dex about vehicles and perils of the warp, you can spell death to GK vehicles. remember: vehicles do NOT get coversaves against perils of the warp so shrouding and flat out moving stormravens die in the droves to these things. I ran two in my list and actually found the mindstrike missles the unsung hero, Hive tyrants, daemon princes, Tervigons, and other GKs have all felt the pain. but like Poke says, you need to run two otherwise you are just wasting points as they are too fragile. also at higher point games, they really start needing finesse to use as there is just too much AT on the board that if dedicated, can take out both ravens in a single phase regardless of coversaves.
My Dice keep me in check
I like mine with tl plasma, typhoon, and the sponsons. 7 blasts and 12 tl boltgun shots can drop a unit of 30 ork boyz in 1 rd of shooting.
Just bought my first one the other day and trying to figure out how to use it without buying another one :/
Putting it in reserve is a good idea but the unit it carrys just becomes a waste. For lulz I was thinking of running it with my 2 land raiders
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
Bring a Libby. Cast shrouding during opponent's shooting phase. Your Raven now has a 2+ (wrong: it's a 3+) cover save when moving flat out the first turn.
*EDIT: Not sure why I thought 2+

Stuck, you corrected yourself as if you were Armed Forces.
I'll stick Assault Cannons on it, with Hurricane Bolters and a TL-Multi-Melta. Running in pairs or solo, Storm Ravens never do me wrong. They work great with a strong deathstar unit inside. Fortunately, Grey Knights have a lot of must kill it now units that my ravens last long enough to do damage.
Problem with stormravens is they are glass cannons that need you to go first and really rely on a GM for PC so you can get them on the board early if you didn't get the first turn, they are also pretty damn screwed if they played against a termor necron list, 9/10 times I would rather have my redeemer with psycannons, very short range but can clear units in buildings holding objectives, people sending melta's against them usually run a risk of losing the squad, they fluff the rules and its S6 AP3 flamer templates
They do have the pro of getting a deathstar across the board very quickly, just makes them more of a target
