    Rough Rider idea

I was wondering if any of the modeling folks out there had run across any motorcycle minis of about the right scale to use as Rough RIders.

Yeah WW2 German outrider kits would be pretty good:
    Hat Industrie 1/72 WWII German Motorcycles - 8127 - £5.99
I think it contains 3x bikes per pack so the price is right.
The detail is also pretty decent:

The 1/72 scale is about the closest you can get for 40k. The BMW is 2.1 meters long and at 1/72 that's about 29mm. Since a ~1.8m infantryman is 28mm the bike is actually a little small. Still it'd give a kind of dirt-bike look and IMO would be fine.

If you want to go the other way though, there's a few kits at 1/48 but the limited choice means it'd get expensive!
Hasegawa 1/48 Japanese Type 97 Motorcycle and Sidecar (2 kits per box) # X4816

You could go to 1/35 but they will look a bit silly. You might as well use SM bikes at that point!

But bikers are so dumb, why would you want to do that?

Thanks for the links. The German outriders are just about a perfect fit. Why you ask? Because bikes fit better with a mech force than smelly horses .

1:72 scale bikes will look reduculously small on 28mm figures.

Try The Assault Group - Home Page

They make 28mm bikes for their ultra modern special forces range to fight in Afganistan. The 28mm metal legs can be kept then you can graft on some cadian torso and arms.

Or these guys from Eureka Miniatures. Eureka Miniatures : Product : Australian Special Forces Pro-Tec helmet on trail bike

Why do you think it will be "ridiculously small"?

1/72 is about 88% of 40k sizes. Yes they will be a bit smaller but we're talking about full on military bikes. These largish bikes will look like smaller 125cc bikes in the 40k world. Very "rough and ready" but to prove the point:

Compare how that looks to the real thing:

See how much smaller the 1/72 figs are vs the bikes on the sprue. These were pretty big machines. They'll look fine as smaller trail bike type things:

40k is hard to scale exactly because of goofy cartoony modelling but it's closest to 1/64 so 1/72 isn't worlds apart.

I suppose the cop-out alternative would be to do a head swap on SM scout bikes. I really wish that Rough Riders could take carapace *sigh*.

Oh yeah carapace armour would be awesome, you could do a feudal world theme with actual knights. Or hell the +1 T for being mounted like guys on bikes get.

SM bikes look way too big for dinky guardsmen. If it fell over I dunno how they'd ever get it up again.

You definitely want smaller bikes for these guys.
