Looking at the PDF playtest rules, you cannot make the 2x assault cannon configuration shown on the Forgeworld site. Does the listing in IA2 change this?
Someone may yet correct me but I cannot find any reference to a contempor with x2 assault cannons.
It is not in the following books:
IA2 (or the IA2 update)
IA Apocalypse II
(I am checking the IA Apocalypse second edition book now).
Yeah. All of the basic contemptors have a mandatory close combat weapon, and you can't even make it a chainfist.
The mortis is the only one with two ranged options, and those have to be the same.
But honestly, BS5 and the ability to count as AA if stationary is pretty amazing. And it's not too pricey.
Which brings me to my next question. Which is better: 8 BS 5 twin linked assault cannon shots or 12 BS 5 assault cannon shots
And can I re-roll hits on a twin linked weapon to try to nab more rends?
Between 8 twin-linked shots and 12 shots both at BS 5, the 12 shots are better. You will get about 10 hits out of the 12, where with the Twin-linked you will normally get all 8. The biggest plus side to the Twin-linked is that it can save you if you roll 5 1's for yout first to-hit roll, but you have a bigger potential with the 12 shots. Now... what are you comparing? What gives 8 twin-linked assault cannon shots?
Did I misread that the contemptor can take 2 twin linked assault cannon arms? Sometimes when I read quickly autocannon = assault cannon
Honestly I was probably going to go with the kheres anyway. Between that and the missile launcher, I'd have a very effective firing platform against tanks and infantry.
I should point out that the Mortis-pattern contemptor is available to Codex chapters, so you can make that using the IAA 2nd Ed rules and use it quite happily, it's not exclusive to Dark Angels like other Mortis dreadnoughts.
Was able to get in a game last night using 2 Mortis pattern with Kheres' and CMLs VS an Ork Kan wall list (Dawn of war). The Dreads were MVP, destroying 2 mobs of 20 boys turn 1 (made 1 run while unable to regroup, and the other was down to 4-5 orks), killed 5 of 6 kans, and gave some additional fire support to 2 10-man Tac Marines who were Rapid Firing into a KFF protected boys mob.
