I have an idea for what I call the Rifleman+ and I would like to know if you guys think it would be worth trying out. It's a Mortis Contemptor Dread with 2x Twin-linked Autocannons and a Cyclone Missile Launcher. It costs the same as a basic Storm Raven but has the advantages of being BS5, AV13 front, a 5++ from shooting and a 6++ in CC, and can move and shoot all 3 weapon systems.
Another idea would be the dual Kheres Assault Cannons and a CML like Bigred from BOLS had put together. Sure the range on the Ass Cans are shorter but you can move and fire everything so it's not that big of an issue, but it would cost and extra 15 points. I think Mathhammer wise the Kheres Assault cannon comes out on top by 1.38 glance/pen higher vs AV11.
Mathwise, the Assault Cannon is second only to the meltagun for killing tanks. Using the Contemptor as a fire support platform isn't a bad idea - you get a nice amount of firepower out of a very durable platform. The problem is that it's nearly double the cost of a regular Dreadnought. It's certainly good....but is it really that much better?
My preference for a Dreadnough is the Rainman (Autocannon/Assault Cannon), which offers a good mix of everything in a still fairly cheap package.
I cannot deny, I WANT ONE*! Damn you, chrispcarter, my wallet hates you now...
*Or possibly 3
What's also good is that whilst regular Contemptors are Elites, the Mortis-pattern are Heavy Support - so you could build an army with 3 of each in quite easily.
What's ALSO also good is that if a Mortis doesn't move, its weapons gain the AA rule - which means they become VERY effective anti-air units, especially if you take the ACs and the Cyclone!
Keep me updated on any more cool fw Astartes kits, though its already coat me a fortune buying all the mkIV Maximus armoured squads.
i usually run the mortis with two assault cannons and missile launcher and i can say that for the cost of just over 200 points what you get is scary. on its own the mortis has wiped out tactical squads, crippled tanks and dreadnoughts and most of all survived multiple lascannons hitting it. best performance i got from mine was it wiped out pack of ravnors in one turn and took a two wounds of a mawloc leading the a victory in the end. the only version of the contemptor that might be better than the mortis is the space wolves one owing to the wolf tail tailismon and wolf tooth necklance, do know someone who runs one and in one game it agaisnt a zoanthrope heavy list only one physic power ever hit the contemptor and that was stoppepd by the invuln save.
They are just that rare combination of great model, fitting rules and a very effective battlefield unit.
I really need to get one. NOW!
chris, if I repped you and commended you to BL, would you buy me one?
I thought not. Worth a try though... :p
Oh well, Christmas coming up so I might get one then. I can only hope...
This is truly what I think dreadnoughts should be capable of.
If you did that... and I came into a large sum of money... and I had already ordered all of mine, then yes, I would get you one
I doubt I'll be getting mine anytime soon, but some day... some day.
