is it me or is the land raider making a huge come back. Went to a tournament this weekend and there was 24 players about 14 where some form of sm da ba pups and 2 gk. An every army had a land raider but the gk. i just never seen so many land raiders at one time lol. It was 1500 point tournament. 3 matches and the top dog was a list with razor spam with 2 land raiders 4 razor backs and 2 grp of ml long fangs. I don't think i've seen some many tank shocks in my life it was great glad to see it coming back. The good news is the gk weren't in the top 8. that made everyone happy. i was just wonder if land raiders are coming back or if this was a fluke.
Either a fluke, or a lack of appreciation for melta-weapons in your local meta.
The Blood Angels have rediscovered the Land Raider because so many of their combat bonuses depend on getting the charge. Not sure about other Marine armies but my guess is spam. It's a vicious cycle.
Land Raiders lost popularity with the advent of special weapon spam. It was impossible to keep them alive when one's opponent could alpha-strike up to six melta teams as early as turn 1, so LRs and other high-value targets disappeared. They were soon replaced by Razorbacks, Chimeras and other light-vehicle spam. That left melta torpedoes without a viable target. Meltas stayed popular because of their improved rolls on the damage chart but, inevitably, players began to spam autocannons and other medium-strength firepower. 40k is now at the point where you never see a Marine Dreadnought without four autocannons, Guard players reject every heavy weapon but the autocannon and multilaser, and so on. This makes the Land Raider useful once again. It's nigh-invulnerable to anything less than a lascannon or (in CC) a Monstrous Creature and no longer needs to fear melta-spam as much.
A bit off-topic, but this has been my Guard army's winning strategy for a couple years now. I make a point to field as little medium armor as possible--only infantry and Russes. Against balanced lists it does well enough, but against statistically perfect, tournament-optimized lists it's great. Their firepower is wasted; even their deepstriking meltaguns can't do anything if my infantry meatshield my Russes. They have to either charge across a killing field or cower on their home objective, all because their so-competitive list didn't have a backup plan.
Don't let that happen to you. There's more to wargaming than spamming the "Most Statistically Effective Unit Against Expected Targets".

I fear no melta, and will always take a land raider in point options. The bottom line is that a Land Raider demands attention. As a DA player, fire directed at the land raider is fire not directed at my speeders or terminators. Also any unit that wants to direct melta fire at my land raider will most likely have typhoon missile launchers, lasscannons, and meltas of my own pointed their way. There is always the bit of luck as well, they still have to roll the dice. Love Land Raiders, with all the good and bad!!!!!!Either a fluke, or a lack of appreciation for melta-weapons in your local meta.

Slightly off topic but... Which armies placed top 5 places?

I think the key here is the point level. At 1500 a Land Raider is more survivable/effective.

That said vehicles that can split fire twin linked lascannons are well worth it when also protecting my most expensive unit from pie plates.
That said a few rhinos a razorback and some predators in 1500 can be very effective too.
people play with metal guns and lascannon but not alot of multi metal runing around so pretty much u just keep your land raider away from the 6 inch range. Power fist can be a problem but u just keep moving 12 or 6 and then its really not that much of a big deal.
