Morning all, thought id post this question here as i can't decide. I'm planning on collecting a Space Marine Battle Company for the rare occasions my local GW runs Apoc games as the rules are either 1000pts or one data sheet, so it'd be pretty sneaky to turn up with a Battle Company. At the moment i just have the Captain to build and paint and im trying to figure out which is best. A Relic blade that is S6, removes extra attack with a pistol but allows you to attack at I5 or a Powerfist which makes you S8, though forces you to attack at I1. Either way im thinking of giving the Captain a Boltgun with Auxillary Grenade Launcher as you can fire a grenade off before you assault. As he's going to be with a Battle Company he'll also be with a Command Squad.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Viewpoints? etc.
Thanks for any replies.
give him both? he can use either in combat you know. or relic blade and stormshield, as it looks pretty cool, and a 3+ inv is very nice, and with artificer armour (2+ sv), in a squad with FNP he reaching an almost unkillable area, but then there are weapons designed to kill the unkillable, so you can still die, particularly at that sort of apocalypse points level.
I suggest giving him the relic blade, and one of his command squad the power fist, minimising the loss in initiative, but still giving you some Str 8 hits.
I play Blood Angels, deal with it.
Well when Apoc is played at the store most people turn up with 1000pts (ignoring all the kiddies who don't know what they are doing), only those who know what they are doing consider bringing a datasheet - such as a baneblade etc.
One of the major strengths of a captain is his initiative. Any plain old sergeant can be given a power fist and hit on I1 with Str8, but your captain is the only person in your whole force that's going to be hitting on I5. Then you give him a relic blade and not only is he ignoring armour, but he's threatening monstrous creatures and also pen'ing vehicles on rear armour.
Aside from that, I like me some artificer armour and for the cost, I think you're better off with a storm shield over a grenade launcher, as it will help protect your captain from all those power fists floating around that will insta-gib him. Of course, there's nothing keeping you from giving him a storm shield and a grenade launcher, though he does start getting a little pricey at that point.
I generally don't give my Captain Articifer armour as with a Command Squad he's got Feel No Pain. I think i will give him a Relic Blade, not sure on other weapon though. Could go for Plasma Pistol for the punch, Storm Bolter for shoot and assault, Bolt Pistol isn't really worth it. Meh still got more thinking to do.
Most expensive option will give you a single 12" str7 shot that more or less always hits (hits on 2s, usually wounds on 2s), but for the same price you're giving yourself a 3++ which is protection from power fists, monstrous creatures, and the odd missile. These are things that will insta-gib your HQ and bypass FNP. But, anytime that you'll be using your pistol, you're probably also going to be charging into assault. How often do you really use a pistol on a cc-based squad, as opposed to how often are they in cc (and taking hits)? My personal theory, is that you need to make your captain as resilient as possible, because once he gets in close combat, he's so easy to single out and he has no extra bodies to jump in front of that powerfist for him. Your other options are to give him more boltgun style shots, but boltgun style shots are pretty lack-luster, and only in a "I had no points left and so this is what he gets" kind of style.
This is all based on the assumption that your command squad is going to attach him to is a cc squad as well. If he's part of a shooty squad (like apothicary + 4xplasmagunners), the theory behind his build changes somewhat.
Of course, rule of cool trumps all. I equip my Wolf Lord with a plasma pistol, even though it's the "worst" choice, simply on a matter of preference. So definitely go with what you like.
I don't use combi-plasmas due to the risk of loosing a wound/dying. Combi-meltas i give to Sternguard, chose to give my Captain a Stormbolter - go with old faithful (the old Metal Space Marine Captain had it, plus the pose is near enough the same).
"A relic blade counts as a power weapon whose hits are
resolved at Strength 6. Due to its size and weight, a model
wielding a relic blade cannot get an extra attack for an
additional close combat weapon."

I'm sorry to jump so hard on you, as you're just going by what you learned and I understand all these editions start to run together after a while, but please, please, don't mislead people with incorrect rules (even if they used to be valid in an older edition).
