After running my first platoon with 4 grenade launchers, I became a fan of GL. I been looking at my Airborne doctrine of using melta guns, and now I am thinking Demolitions with 3 flamers or 3 GL, both are templates. so hit automatic if the template does not scatter (does not apply to flamer). the vets bs4 will help with the scatter).
Also been looking at putting a heavy weapons team in with the vets, what do you think will complement the most?
This all depends on the amount of Vets you are running. In 2000 I personally run 4 Melta Vets and 2 Flamer/Demolitions Vets, all in Chimeras. The difference here is that your Guardsmen have to disembark to fire, which is why I would encourage the 3 Flamers squad. It will get so many more hits than 3 GLs it's unreal. We do need Melta Vets, as good reliable anti tank, but we do not need to fill our troops with them, although if when you say Airborne you mean 9 Vendettas then that's another story. Still, how many are you running? Also, I never put Heavy Weapons in Vets personally, but I've seen autocannons used when the Chimera is stationary, don't know how that'll affect you though.

I am running 4 vendettas and 2 valkyries with MRPs, but that number will probably go to 5 / 6 vendettas and 3 valkyries. My tactic rush with demolitions and assault the vehicle asap. my HQ will probably end up with Plasma and Meltas, running them as hit teams.
I have been thinking HWT only in one vet team, dropped off in cover, maybe with harker, to take distance shots at targets.

If we're choosing a heavy weapon to complement grenade launchers then the heavy bolter is the best option. GLs can only hurt the lightest vehicles so quantity of fire is more important than quality. Plus, you aren't losing too much by deciding to move.
I think power weapons and carapace armor are better investments than heavy weapons for such aggressive vet squads. They will surely see combat and the armor will guard against vehicle explosions and bolter-equivalents. In fact, if you're doing a serious skimmer/veteran list then Bastonne would be worth his price. Give his squad plasma guns, deploy him behind another Vet squad for safety and put his FomT order to use.

As veterans will be riding or flying across the battlefield, a heavy weapon is useless on them. However, if you really do want to have them taking a static position, I'd go for the missile launcher. BS4 really helps placing a high strength shot into tough enemies, or reduce scatter when going for the frag.
Veterans are designed for special weapons, but who knows, it might work for you. Let us know!

I have always wanted to make a Grenade Launcher/Flamer and Heavy Bolter only army. Y'know, World War I style.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
my guard are Elysians so I run vets in valkyries with 3 meltas and demo charges and vets in vendettas with 2 flamers and a heavy flamer again with demos, its just balancing what you already have so if you got loads of anti tanks take flamers or grenade launchers
You mean Catachan style? hahahaI have always wanted to make a Grenade Launcher/Flamer and Heavy Bolter only army. Y'know, World War I style.
As for the question at hand I've opted for Missile Launchers... Basically just my views on it but I always see missile launchers as the default and most flexible heavy weapon. They can be used as AT or AI weapons and if your running grenade launchers then you can essentially cause a small barrage style attack on the opponent and lets face it.... Thats what Guard do best
i find in most games with objectives i like to run vets with foward sentry, 3 plasma and a las cannon against armored enemies like SM where the ap2 is useful or sniper rifles or GL and autocannons against lighter fitted armies like eldar and tau, and just sit them in cover close to or on an objective and do very well to hold it. you can always ut them in VALKS and gravchute them in onto or close to an object near or in cover.
