So, I collected Dark Angels a while back (around the start of 4th edition iirc), and then later sold them, and got to work on a deathwing, shortly before 5th edition. I've got back into the hobby, and I want to build and Imperial fists termie/dread army using the DA dex again. Rules wise, I'm pretty sure it's allowed, but I was wondering how viable these lists are in 5th edition? I'll still be making the army, as I have the models. I was just wondering what kind of competitiveness I should expect?
At any rate, I'll get some army lists up later, along with some WiP threads. But yeah, are they still a viable army?

Deathwing isn't a bad army - if you go heavy on the TH/SS termies and CMLs, it can actually get pretty good.
If the Dreadnoughts are worth it is a bit more debatable. They do provide some relatively cheap fire support, but they'll be a natural target for every autocannon and krak missile on the table, since those weapons are ineffective against terminators. I prefer to avoid them for that reason.
DA dreadnoughts are great because you can buy them the very cheap venerable upgrade, which makes them very resilient against enemy fire. If you add some excellent post FaQ typhoon speeders and cheap dakka predators, you will have nice armor saturation on the field. Pure deathwing army lacks support, especially anti infantry support if you take only TH/SS terminators with CML.

At a squad level, definitely agreed with the th/ss and cyclone saturation among your termie squads in relation to how competitive your list will be, mainly the more storm shields you have the more survivable they are and the easier it'll be for them to be around to claim objectives and such. Usually a minimum I would suggest is 2 storm shields per squad but up to 5 is just as well.
As for army composition as a whole, any proportion of termies to support seems to work. Lists that have worked for me have ranged from full th/ss squads (usually for apoc games where I tend to go titanhunting) to being supported by 3 typhoons, 2 ven dreads, 2 autolas preds, and a vindi in 2k games. I'd say you want at least 1 termie squad per 500 points at a base minimum for objective purposes and most armored support options are viable (especially typhoons).
In regards to venerable dreadnoughts, I love them. My list that runs 2 venerable dreadnoughts w/ plasma cannon and extra armor is great for advancing alongside the termies and soaking up anti-tank firepower that'd otherwise be directed at the termies (extra armor helping them avoid being stunlocked in place) or tarpitting anything that can't deal with av12 in melee from kroot hordes to SM tactical squads w/ only a pfist and krak grenades. Though they'll often end up missing both arms and sometimes immobile as well, they've almost always made it into melee with my termies and not often have they died without having made a good impact on the game beforehand.
I am placing my money with Certs too.

Deathwing can be competitively viable if they are boring: i.e. spam TH/SS/CML squads. The old days of 2-3 Land Raiders lists with dreadnoughts and less squads is dead. Unless of course you're a fluff guy like me.
I just finished painting a new Deathwing List:
2 DWT shooty squads in LRC's
1 DWT CC squad in LRC with Belial
The list is very compact: 21 models in 2k. It is inferior to small count lists like GK and gets its butt handed to it on a regular basis; but it is fluffy...and when DA get a new codex sometime in the next 1-2 years, I'm sure mech DW will be viable again. Everything in 40k is cyclical; so if you don't want to slog 35 termies and Belial down the field as your 2k force, just build the one you want to play, be patient, and you will be rewarded. Winning isn't eveything.
Why the shooty squads in crusaders if i might ask?
So spammy when are we going to have some pics of those DA?
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Why LRC's? I just think they're a more rounded platform, and an army so small would find itself positively hosed without some anti-swarm. Whereas if I had gone LR, I'd have lots of lascannon goodness sure, but I wouldn't stand a snowball's
chance of beating a large Ork or Nid army. This list has deficiencies, it's a fluff list, but at least my anti-personnel fire power is decent, and the dreads give me some long range anti-tank.
Multimeltas on the LRC's and of course a few good ol' TH give me up close and personal anti-armor. But, like I said, it's meant to be fluffy. I do have a probably futile hope of mech DW being viable come a 6th edition codex, but I'm probably
dreaming. I'll try to get some pics up tonight, everything is finished except for my conversion of Belial, which I haven't started (saving the best for last). I'll start a new thread obviously I don't want to hghjack this one.
