Hey all, I'm starting a Salamanders army and my first buy was a tactical squad, as I don't have have my codex on me (my friend has borrowed it) I can't see what the points are for the options of special weapons, or even which ones I can take. My army is going to be fairly fluffy so I'm aiming to have meltas and flamers everywhere, and with the addition of Vulkan He'stan they'll be boosted as well, but I can't see a squad with a flamer and a multi-melta being very effective? I still want it to be competitive after all. If anyone can tell me their thoughts on this and what would be a good idea thanks in advance!
I generally go for meltaguns, combimeltas, and plasma cannons on my tactical squads. Multimeltas are really only workable on platforms that can fire on the move, due to their limited range. If I'm fielding Vulcan I'll run one of the tac squads with a flamer and combiflamer instead, and use them to bake massed infantry units.
Just don't forget to include some long ranged fire support. It's a common mistake amoung Vulcan armies.
I agree with watchwood you only use multi-meltas on platforms, I found that out the hard way, like dreadnaughts. I never really used plasma cannons in a tactical squad and I don't know why. I guess I don't like that scatter? Well anyway with a Vulkan list melta guns and combi flamers are your best bet for combat squads in a transport of some kind and a missle in the back laying down support. I like the combi flamer over combi melta do to fluffy reasons, only for tacticle squads though.
Thanks for the comments, I ended up going with combi-flamer, meltagun and missile launcher, decent anti-infantry and anti-tank in one squad, and I'm loving my conversion of my sergeant, combi-flamer and a thunder hammer just thought I'd share it with you guys.
Excellent choice! The range on the missile launcher, and its versatility, make it fantastic!
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
First thing is looking at how you will deploy the squad, and then their tactical role.
Will you use a Rhino or a Drop Pod?
Both can only carry 10 guys, so you will need to Combat Squad your Tac Squad into 2x 5 man teams. In which case a team with a Lascannon or Missile Launcher makes sense. Having said that, for losing one round of shooting, you could use a 5 man Combat Squad (4 bolters + Multi-Melta). Walk then Run them towards the centre of the board, into cover. Being in the centre allows the MM to have a much better effect as usually more enemies are in range. Same logic applies Running them towards an Objective close(ish) to your deployment zone.
Vulkan + 5 Marines. This part of the squad would have a Sarge with a Power Fist, and a Meltagun. Can't remeber if the Sarge can have a Combi- too. If so, a Combi-Melta or Combi-Flamer could both be decent choices.
Drop Pods carry 12, sgt can have a combi. If you pod in you will most likely want to combat squad IF you take a heavy weapon with them. If you do I would not give the Sgt a fist as they tend to not get their attacks in if in a 5 man squad. Same thing if you take a Razorback. If you take them in a Rhino then you have a couple options you can use them to sit an objective with and not combat squad, or combat squad and use the rhino as a mobile Melta platform.
It really depends on what role you see having for them.
