Okay then, my gaming buddie and I have recently being playing Planet Strike. (Real fun, a big difference from normal Games) Problem my friend is having is that he has been losing to me, and I take a little pleasure but not much when I say, he's been losing badly. Last two games it was obvious I was going to table him from turn 3 by turn 5 maybe turn 6. He doesn't mind losing as long as it's a close game.
He feels either his codex is not up to the challenge of planet strike or he's doing something wrong with his list building and/or hows he's playing them. So I would like anyone and everyone to give some useful hint and tips for to build and use his lists. I say that there is nothing wrong with his codex, sure its got its flaws but its far from broken and has some pretty nasty stuff in it.
I have only used grey knights in planet strike and I don't pull my punches when we play because if he had the upper hand in the game he doesn't either. He has started to get a bit depressed about the whole thing though and I feel that if I throw a game and he notices he would be even more upset.
I honestly think though that the fact that I load up on as many Storm Ravens as possible is what is winning me these games. I reserve them (Im definately not leaving them out to be firestormed!) and when they come in they drop by the nearest enemy unit they can get to and I melta the tanks/buildings with my ravens/dreadnoughts and take out his Anti-tank early to spare my ravens. The Ravens make Grey Knights fast mobile and deadly, I can hit his weak flanks and watch his army crumble under the relentless assault.
But I want to help him out if he isn't using his codex to its best potential. FYI He often uses a caestus in our games, it can be a hassle but one good melta shot can take it down as good as any landraider.
Here's a question for you. Does he need a better list or do you think you want to try a different GK build? If he needs a better list it would help to know what he has been running and what other units he has to work with.
I as my user name implies, collect eldar and have had up to 9 Waveserpents in a 3k game not including other other AV units, thats 9 AV12 units and he cant take down 3 of them now when he has completely destroyed/immoboilsed all 9 WS by turn 3 in the past? If I stop his long fangs then my stuff survives, if I dont then my tanks/vehicles go bye-bye. Surely Space wolves are not that reliant on long fangs to be competitive? Actually, this could be the big question. Most of his Anti-tank is purely Long Fangs, give him another reliable option and this could be the answer to his problems.
I will admit that since getting and using Ravens I've had an easier time winning but the raven is not cheap and is certainly far from indestructable. They add the nessessary Melta factor to my army, something that GK codex lacks unless you go inquisitorial and Dread noughts armed with Multimeltas only have a fighting chance when loaded into a raven other wise you need to use the dreaded psyrifle build. They are my main stay for dealing with heavy armour. Most players in the GK forums don't use them because they die so easily, I'm one of the few that use them on a regular basis.
My friend 99% of the time takes Nijal Stormcaller, 50% Ragnar, 25% Logan and on occassion all 3. He usually takes 2 squads of LFs armed with 3 Missle Launchers and 2 Lascannons. He generally takes 2 or more 10 man squads of Grey Hunters armed with at least 1 melta and either a second Melta or a plasma gun or if he's playing nids or guard then he'll take a flamer. Most of the time he will stick a Wolf guard in termie armour and cyclone missle launcher in with the Long Fang Squads. The rest of the wolf guard get split off into squads while the main bulk of them will be in a land raider, generally armed with a combination of lightning claws and storm shields in termie armour. He also points depending takes Thunder wolves. Other than that Rhinos and the rest of the codex is occassional use or not used at all.
No love for the Puppy player? Come on guys, you have no suggestions at all?
