Hello! I'm a returning Grey Knights player (wooo plastics now!) and since I have no experiance with the new codex, I'm not quite sure what my next buy should be. Currently I have:
2 GKs with power sword
2 GKs with hammers
5 GKs with halberd
4 GKs with flamers
(13 total grey knights)
1 land raider
1 Dreadnaught (with melta/CCW and stormbolter)
1 DreadKnight (unassembled)
All the GKs and terminators are the old pewter models.
So with what I have now, what would be my best bet?
Thanks for the help!
Well that depends on what kind of build your wanting. There are several really strong and competitive builds out there. Coteaz-wing (AKA an inquisition army which is built primarily around henchmen warbands), but since your probably wanting to build up around the models you already own there is also Crowe-wing which is built up around purifiers as troops meaning youd have to purchase castellan crowe for your HQ, this build could be a good one for you since it needs power armour troops. and halberds are only a 2 point upgrade for these guys. Draigo-Wing, lots of 2+ armour and a good choice if your low on cash since it has a really low model count.
So do you have any ideas about the kind of build your wanting?
Draigo wing really interests me (it just 'feels' like how GKs should be lore wise) But I don't think that fits well with what I have. Granted, I have all pewter models, so replacing them isn't a heartbreak for me. WHat other builds are there? Also, I love dreadnaughts, and being able to fit more in would be awesome.
Dreadnoughts have a lot of uses in GK and are better than other marine codexs. A favourite (Well I should say a favourite of GK players and hated by everone else) is the psyrifle Dreads which is a dreadnought armed with 2 autocannon and given psybolts. For 135pts you then have a Dreadnought that throws out 4 Twin-linked, 48 inch, S8 AP4 shots. This is one of....no the best long range anti-tank we have. Anything AV12 or less will be feeling the hurt if targeted by these bad boys. AND to top it off out Dreads have fortitude, which is a psychic spell allowing them to ignore shaken/stunned results they suffered in the last turn. Awesome!
If you like Dreads to be up close and personal (Armed with Dreadnought CC Weapon) then I'd possibly recommend a Storm Raven to get them there. A Storm Raven can not only transport 12 models (6 Termies) it can also carry a dreadnought at the same time, and throw out a world of hurt. It can move 24" flat out and thanks to Power of the Machine Spirit it can still fire its multi-melta to pop those pesky landraiders. Storm Ravens can also take teleport homers so if any of you termies/paladins want to deep stike and landwithn range of it they won't scatter. Be aware though that Storm Ravens are not Landraiders and can be killed quite easily. I love my Storm Ravens, I run at least 2 if points allow it because they do anything and everything I could ever want them to do. A lot of people don't like them because they are so fragile and quite expensive (points wise).
Thanks! So it's looking like I just need to pick up a squad (either strike or terminators) and eBay a few more AoBR dreads! Would running Dreadknights for CC and pysledreads for fire support work well?
Thanks again for the help!
One thing to note is that getting auto-cannons for your Dreads is a bit of a pain (and expensive).
Just about everything in the GK codex is usable. You don't need to be timid in your purchase of GK kits. You just need to be careful to not over spend Look through the codex and build a 2000pt list, then see what need to buy to complete that list.
Just my two cents
If your going power armour then just buy a few of the boxes, you can build any of the power armour troops from it, strikes/purifiers/interceptors.
Thanks for the help guys! I went and purchased 3 more Dreadnaughts (3 for 25 bucks!) and two boxes of GK terminators.
New question though, can you make a competitive low point list with terminators/paladins?
