A friend of mine just gave me a whole bunch of space marines stuff. I don't play 40k, more of a fantasy guy, but I figured I would keep some of it. I'm told things add up to right at about 6000 points worth of models. I don't think I will EVER play anything that big, as I rarely hit games of that size in fantasy. What I'd like from the LO Space Marine community is input as to which models I should keep to keep the army fun, and useful. I'm more interested in it being fun, not looking for the "super competitive" type lists. That being said, I don't want to lose every single game either. I'd like to keep about 2000-2500 points (or whatever the average 40k game is), but I don't want to keep everything. The idea is to sell the rest, whether its here on LoBay, Ebay, Craigslist, what have you.... here is what he told me everything is:
75 space marines (various weapons, but plenty of bits to make whatever weapons I want/need)
10 Vanguard Vet
10 Sterngaurd Vet
14 Legion of the Damned
10 Assault Marines
10 Scout Bikes
6 Dreadnaughts (2 have fixed weapons, the other 4 have all arms magnetized)
6 Drop Pods
15 "extra models" that couldn't be identified, but seem to be some sort of Honor Guard I would think.
So what should I keep to maintain a list that is fun to play, but won't lose every single game? again, 2000-2500 points max. And no, I am not opposed to getting rid of the land raider. If you guys suggest I keep it ok. But if you suggest I get rid of it that's perfectly fine too. I have no attachment to any model, and I don't know how anything works, so I'll just trust you all on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Honestly? I'd probably hang onto all of them. There's enough variety in there that you could do some fairly different stuff each game, so you wouldn't get bored with doing the same thing over and over.
At the very least I'd suggest keeping them all until you've learned the ropes and what sort of playstyle you like. Marine armies can go in a number of different directions, depending on the taste of the player.
believe me, i considered it. But presented with the option to play fantasy or 40k, i'll play fantasy every time. Truth is these guys will seldom be used, so i don't mind if i have a set list. all my fantasy armies number in the 7-10k range, so i have all the different options can can switch it up. but here, i've got 1-2 people that i might play with, and one of them i won't see for a few years at best. I like having options, but 200 or so models just sitting around collecting dust isn't good enough. I'd rather SOMEONE use them.
after a bit of research i think i want to keep the sternguard at least. Their multi ammo option sounds really usefull. was thinking something like 30-40 marines, 2-3 dreds, both rhinos, either both preditors OR the land raider (i dont see myself going heavy tank), 2-3 drop pods, 55-6 terminators, and the assault marines. With the jump packs i can play them as either assault or vanguard.
Alright. Normal 40k games to to be a bit smaller scaled then WFB matches, generally between 1k and 2k points. Do you have a preference between shooty and assaulty armies, and do you have detailed lists of model wargear handy? (Presumably you want to get the best you can out of this list without having to buy anything)
i dont know how 40k really works, so i don't have any prefrence to shooty vs assaulty. I guess a balanced collection would likely be best, but i do want those sterngaurd in there, don't know if that makes it overly shooty or not.
As per wargear, i wouldn't know what guns these things were anyway. Assume i have enough bits/greenstuff to model whatever i want. But if I had to guess I'd say:
7 flamer marines
2 rockets marines
2 las cannon marines
2 plasma cannon marines
5 heavy bolter marines
4 carrying swords and some sort of pistol
5 with power fist
all the assault guys have chainswords
3 terminators have rockets on their shoulders
all weapons availiable/magnetized for tanks and dreds.
3 large bags of bits, including:
all grades of weapons, anything i could want i would imagine. if not there's always greenstuff
extra heads/arms/torsos/shoulder pads
10-15 metal hammers
tons of what i can only imagine is armor plateing for the tanks/dreds
