Over the past couple of months i've been working on a full Sisters of Battle codex - 114 pages of background fluff, unit descriptions, images, and a full army list with 31 units and 13 named characters.
It still needs a lot of work to balance and polish so i'm throwing it out to anyone who wants to give it a go, or who just wants to read the Ministorum's background fluff.
PM me for a link. File provided as a single 4 MB PDF.
i'd like to read some good background. Is it your own creativity or is it canon-based, then expanded or is it a collection of strict canon gathered from WD, black library, old codex etc? pm sent!
The majority of the background material is taken from the 2nd and 3rd edition books, forgeworld, and from related publications (such as Ephrael Stern from the daemonifuge books). A few bits have also crept in from newer sources.
I've had to write some of it just to fill out the unit entries - though i'm not much of a writer so a few units have larger images, ecclesiarchal quotes, or some unique special rule or wargear item to take up the space.
I'd like to have a peek through it. Might not be able to do much to help, but could playtest stuff out of it for sure and offer opinions etc pm sent.
Incidentally - if it's not 114 pages long then something has gone wrong somewhere (the last numbered page should be the summary, p110)
Great job there A.T. i would be very much interested to see the work of a dedicated sisters player.Keep it up!
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Only read a couple of pages so far (found some spelling errors and general corrections already ) but I'm just posting here so I can find this thread again if I need it!
After my first read through, I love the flavour but there are too many special rules, not every unit needs 2 or 3 special rules in my opinion.
Also there are some units that are way too good:
Hieromatyr has some unbelievable abilities, needs some serious toning or base cost upped significantly
Sarissas for large squads are too cheap (maybe 1 point per model)
Retributors need to be 70/75 points base cost.. too cheap to make a 4 h bolter monster right now
Sisters novicae are wayyyyyy too cheap, these would be an almighty unit 20 strong for just 150 points, flying into combat using celestians faith power
I'll keep reading and play some games with it, really enjoying reading it though, I would buy this in a second
Most of the rest of it is a side effect of the source material - a lot of rules that are only relevant to a single unit (pariahs, zealots, knight titan weapons, etc), while most unique wargear was originally available to many units (sarissas, banners, ceremonial blades, etc) but was made unique to give the units a more individual feel and reduce the size of the army list entries.
There are definitely some that have special rules above and beyond though - the palatine and dominion variants originated from my not having enough fluff material for their entry :pThe Hieromatyr needs game-testing balance. The current base unit is 15pts less than the WD celestine and lacks the heavy flamer and resurrection abilities. Of course it could be argued that celestine was too cheap but it was the only suitable starting point.Hieromatyr has some unbelievable abilities, needs some serious toning or base cost upped significantly
A few of the abilities are roughly equivalent to other items - relic blade, storm shield, simulacrum. I can see the convocation's wording is poor, it's supposed to be a once-only thing but it doesn't read that way.
So far playing with the WD sisters celestine has been good, but overrated outside of her resurrection (which really makes her work) - which is why i'm wary about overcooking the Hieromartyr. Which abilities caught your eye?Sarissas are intentionally cheap en-mass - they exist to encourage the use of large squads on foot rather than 10-12 man mech squads.Sarissas too cheap / Retributors need to be 70/75 points base cost
They need all the help they can get as even IG guardsmen hit harder in combat point for point (though sisters gear up better if you spend the points)
75 point retributors would cost the same as longfangs - heavy bolters just don't cost that much these days.
Their price hasn't been changed from the WD dex (they've actually been nerfed, losing rending as a side effect of becoming scoring) - I can't really justify making their model cost 14 points or heavy bolters 10, it doesn't fit with prevailing 5th ed pricing.
Ikbuh (who's been helping me for a while) has also been avoiding retributors in his list, though I think out of personal preference. It would be interesting to see how taking advantage of their new role as troops to field a ton of heavy bolters works out on the table.
Keep the feedback coming though. I'll bump the novicae to 6 points (they aren't that cheap relative to henchmen, ork boyz, etc given their lack of transports) and see if I can't condense a few rules down (i.e. all martyrs/soulless are fearless - no need for both rules, etc)
I'm not precious about the dominions' specialist rule either (just give them scouts back) but they'd need a few paragraphs to fill the space.
If you can be specific about where you feel there are too many / confusing special rules in particular i'll see what I can do - as I mentioned though sisters do just start with a big bunch of them by default, a consequence of the changes to faith from the WD dex.
Retribs - Call it flu or idiocy, thought they had divine guidance, they are pretty fair actually.
On Hiero - I would pretty much permenantly have invulnearble/convocation and no forgiveness, the latter being utterly crazy giving her effectively 9/10 poisoned/power weapon attacks a turn (the rerolls to hit and poisoned weapon make this ability much better than it sounds).
Additional rules - seraphim (any need for thurible? its like 7 rules on one unit), deathstalker (just too many things to remember for what should be a simple vehicle, ditto with incarcerator, seems a little bit too complicated to be used correctly without continually looking at codex, best units for me have two or three simple rules that combine well.
Like I said I will play with it over the next few weeks and see what I think, but really loving making lists already..
