I was thinking of picking up a pack of Sternguard when I get a unit of bikes (4 bikes + 1 attack bike) and was wondering how everyone fields them. I was thinking 6 in a Rhino but really I am not sure. Their weapons are nice but I don't know how to use them. Any thought would be great. I could not find anything by searching in the fourms.
well, if you aregonna use a rhino you get the ability to shoot from the top, but I honestly would go with a razorback if I was running 6 of them. You can charge them into the battle and dismount them and you get the TL lascannon or Heavy bolters as a bonus.
The use of Sternguard is to have a squad that has a specialty weapon for any situation. They are a little steadier then regular marines (Ld 9), and have an additional attack per round (At 2)
My personal preference is to not use them, but that is just my opinion.

Using them as a full squad of 10 with Lysander works quite well because of his bolter drill rule.

I'm a big fan of combat squads. If you take a unit of ten then you have the flexibility of remaining as a large unit for KP missions and when you think you're going to need large volumes of firepower (Deathstars...). Yet you can also break them down into five man units if you want more flexibility.
I think they work well in a drop pod but really you need multiple units to pull that off properly. I think they really come into their own when you take them with Pedro Kantor so they are able to not only contest, but hold, objectives. His special rule essentially allows you to take only two troops choices and still have the ability to field ten scoring units!
I'd suggest a smattering of combi-weapons. I favour the melta because it's just so useful, you lose the double tap of plasma but can now Instant Death most things including those nasty Paladins.
It helps that the miniatures are awesome too.
Best method I've heard is a throw-away squad with combi-weapons in a drop pod. You can do a full squad, half with combi-meltas, half with combi-flamers, and then add in a couple heavy-flamers. The turn they land you combat squad them, have the combi-meltas go after a big expensive target, then have all the flamers go after any infantry around (or what's inside the land raider, if that was your target). The special ammo just becomes a bonus after that. Though, maybe that was the best option if you're playing against 'nids or dreadknights or wraithlords.
Personally, I use them as cheap devastators. I can take two lascannons in a 5 man squad of sternguard for less than a 5 man squad of devistators. Plus I get the special ammo and the extra attacks. While I don't recommend this (I have a weakness for gimpy theme lists), I do believe that one of the great things about sternguard is how versatile the unit is. They can make great monster hunters with their poison ammo in a razorback, or you can stick them in a rhino with heavy flamers and do drive-bys on infantry. Two str5 templates is nothing to scoff at. Take that in a vulkan list and it's pretty sexy. And, of course, don't forget about the above-mentioned combi-weapons. From a competitive standpoint, cheap combi-weapons are where the sternguard really shine.
Currently im running 2 ten man squads of sternguard with 5 combi meltas and 5 combi flamers in each, put them both in drop pods, one has pedro kantor, then have a 10 man unit of assualt terminators with TH/SS and vulkan,
I get special ammo
TL flamers and meltas
TH all are master crafted.
Use them in combat squads for objective based games or as whole units when I need a very larger hammer to smash my opponent to peices.
If He is For me, Who shall stand against me
Seems a lot of people don't use them. I kinda like them because of the ammo but I guess it may not be worth it for a price. I was thinking 6 in a Rhino for anti-marine and such. I guess I will start off with the bike squad.
I have not used them myself, but they have great synergy with Vulkan, Lysander, and Pedro. I think if will really depend on how you want to use them. As you stated you want them to hunt MEQ units. I would think that a unit of 10 with Storm Bolters in a Drop Pod w/Lysander would work wonders. In this case you would want an even number of pods (most likely 2) so that you can drop this unit a little later in the game once you have the enemy transports opened up and the MEQs on the field. In this case you can put out 20 Twin-Linked shots with Vengeance Rounds (R18" AP3). That should do the job nicely but it will cost a pretty penny at 535 points for the squad, pod, and Lysander. You could always give 1/2 of them Combi-Melta to combat squad, open a transport with the Melta and clean them up with the Storm Bolters.
Now that everyone noticed the price of 5 points per combi weapon I could drop 10 in a drop pod and get off 20 plasma shots, thats 20 str 7 ap2! I think I could get my 200 points back with that. Or maybe 10 melta! I bet 10 melta could take anything out!
If I bought the 10 storm bolters could they use the special ammo? That would be nice but not sure how it would work.
"Special Issue Ammunition: Each boltgun-armed model in a Sternguard Veteran squad automatically comes with several special ammunition types. Each time a Sternguard Veteran squad fires, the controlling player can choose which type of ammunition is being used. Each special ammunition type replaces the boltgun profile (including boltguns that are part of a combi-weapon) with the one shown here. All models in the squad must use the same ammunition type during that rooting phase."

So it doesn't work with bolt pistols either.
