I really like sentinels, both the models and the fact that it's a kind off cheap fast heavy weapon. I will use a lot of them and therefore also have a couple of questions about them.
Weapons: Autocannons or Multi-lasers? Personally I prefer autocannons but I'm not that experienced to say the least.
Armoured Crew Compartment: I want it mostly because IMO it looks a lot better then without. But the questions is, is it worht it?
CC sentinel: I'm thinking about using one sentinel with heavy flamer and perhaps Hardened Fighters to bind up alot of weak cc-units, like gaunts for example. But is this a good idea in a balanced army?
Drop Troops: Using sentinel with autocannons and drop trooping them in the rear of the enemy sounds sweet to me..does it sound sweet to the more experinced as well?
Maybe if you drop enough of them, otherwise I see them getting rapid fired on. Mass guardians, SM, DE ect will bring sentinels down unless you drop some significant amount of troops with them. In that case I would probily arm some with lascannons and the rest with multilasers. CC Sentinel sounds like a cool idea, probily more effective then depending on the dice to hit.

Dropping Sentinels in is one of the best tactics.
Sentinels dropping behind and enemy will almost ALWAYS draw fire away from the rest of your force.
Sentinels are also very versitile in their equipment. Lascannons are great for tank hunting and will really panic any armored units your opponent has. Autocannons (I love the look, I cant help but use them) are a decent mixture or armor and troop killing capabilities. Multi-lasers are one of the cheapest and most effective guns you can give them. Multi-lasers get the most shots per turn, but can also damage rear (sometimes even side) armor of vehicles.
Ive seen people post on the effectiveness of Heavy Flamer Sentinels being dropped behind large groups of enemy troops, depends on what you are playing against.
I always field Sentinels, they are one of the most versitile units at your disposal.
EDIT: If you are going with close combat Sentinels, remember that they dont get very many attacks, but with the new rules, they only need to take out one model to win the combat I suppose...

Sentinels can be fun I have 3 with lascannons and harden vet.
The Predator Lingers forth. Suddenly the sound of several wipping sounds can be heard far off into the distance, a second later the once mighty Predator ignited with flames. "Sir what was that" The srgt replied "Its those damn Broadsides"
Hear the wip, fear the Broadside.
Drop Troop + Sentinels + Cleanse = frustrating for you opponent.
"see that pice of terrain in the corner of you deployment zone, there's a sentinel in there "
I would reccommend Autocannons. I am also inexperienced with Guard but I think for their armor value(low), a lascannon is a waste of points. The heavy flamer is good against hordes but little else. The multilaser is really weak. 3 shots yeah, but decent strength and crappy AP is not very good. The autocannon is better against armor and can instant kill many normal troops without saves, for only sacrificing 1 shot. In the long and short run, the one less shot but better gun will help you most. Autocannons all the way, especially with Cadians(fluffy). In ForgeWorld there is a missile launcher Sentinel, maybe those(with converting) that could also be very good.

OK, thanks for all feedback. I'll probably go with four sentinels all carrying autocannons, then divide them in to two squads (containing two each). That way I can drop one of the squads behind enemy armor/dropping them for objects/bind up gaunts etc and still have two on the board firing their S7 weapons.
Ok, all fine but another important question: Is Amoured Crew Compartment worth it? It looks damn good after all.
I dont think you will get a definate answer on your armored crew compartment question.
Depending on how you use your sentinels, sometimes it can be worth the investment. However, I believe most player use their sentinels as a cheap unit to harass the enemy. 15 points adds up quickly over a sentinel squad or two, those are points that can do a lot of good elsewhere in your army list.
Say you take a squad of 3 sentinels w/ multi-lasers, and upgrade them with the armored crew compartment. You you dont take the upgrade, you could afford another sentinel!
I believe most Guard players see every armored crew compartment as one less autocannon or missile launcher in an infantry squad.
If you think your sentinels will really need the slight edge that open topped gives them, try it. Not to mention that a closed top sentinel model looks cooler.

how bout... "HELL NO, DON"T TAKE ANY DAMN ARMORED CREW COMPARTMENTS!!!!!!!"
but seriously, perhaps in 3ed ... you could keep a sentinel hull down w/ ACC and he could actually perhpas.. survive a lil longer.
but now, no way. sentinels get penetrated sooooo easily. it's just not worth it. save those points and buy something worth while.
thing about it, 3 Mars Sentinels w/ ACC... or 4 Mars Sentinels ?? which would you rather have?
I personally take them just with multilasers. They wound on 2s and it can maybe pop a rhino. I was thinking of giving them hunter kill missles but one use and BS 3 just seems to risky
