Good day all
I was just wondering which one is better at anti infantry - BTW I'm talking about just having one on its own
I normally go predator but i have had a closer look at the Whirlwind and it looks more dangerous than i first thought with the pinning and the -1 Ld
So what are your thoughts on the topic?

My view of how to play Tau: "Look at an enemy squad. Blink once. If the enemy is still standing, then you're doing it wrong."
the autocannon/heavy bolter sponson predator is good against hordes, cheap and reliable. The whirlwind is more expansive and because it disperse it works better in pair than solo, but with the ability to choose which missile you fire is quite handy especially against expensive unit the enemy think is safe behind cover . The fact that it can be fire without line of sight is a blessing too.
i guess it depend more on your play style but i would recommend the predator if you only want to field one tank.
I do like the whirlwind right up until the point I have to roll 2D6 and the scatter dice, then watching the template move and blow an empty part of the board. The predator gets a fist full of dice so more chance of making an impact and even if you have a few misses you still have a good chance at giving out some punishment
For a solo unit, I would take the whirlwind. Same cost either way, but with the whirlwind you can park it behind a hill out of LOS so that there is no retaliation or for it to be picked out because it's all alone. You'd be surprised how well a big pie plate can hurt hordes, especially when you're ignoring cover saves. The full scatter does hurt, though, but if you're aiming at hordes, hopefully that will give you a bigger target to hit.
I guess the main difference is: a dakka pred is good against hordes and light vehicles, a whirlwind is purely hordes and hordes in cover.
I would say for faster hordes like Dark Eldar and Nids the predator is better, you get more precise shots. If you are dealing with the more "Dig on and shoot you" type of armies then the whirlwind if the clear leader.
However gonna offer my two cents here. I prefer the vindicator over both of them. strength 10 large template will blow standard infantry and most elite in one hit. as well as having a better then average chance of popping most tanks. and with the siege shield can pull it right into cover

Predator all the way. A armament destroyed wont ruin its day, it can still blast away
I've not used a Whirlwind in so long I'm probably no longer even qualified to make a statement on it, but... that's kind of my point.
Whirlwinds are one of those units that seem pretty nice on paper, but in reality, just don't really work all that well. In my experience, the no LOS thing just doesn't really translate to being obviously better than a Predator.
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
I ALWAYS take a whirlwind for a few reasons.
1: You can park them out of line of sight of the enemy
2: The large blast is great against hordes and can hit lot of troops in 1 hit. I can hit 15+ troops if they are resonably close together.
3: You can use the no cover save shot which means you can nail 5+ armor save guys hiding in cover and scouts that get the bonus's save goes down
4: I already run 2x AC/Laz preds :-P
Take all 3 heavy slots, 1 Whirlwind, 2 pred's, put preds on the flanks, TL Lascannon and H. Bolters and whirlwind behind cover in the middle
I always take my preds but they are kind bad for someone who doesn't really use tanks, i find it hard to manouvre (Forgot how to spell lol) them and they seem to be big targets once the fire at a unit
Whirlwinds I've only used a couple times but the first few times I wish I would've taken 2 so I guess if you got the cash go 2 whirlwinds they scatter but they are fairly decent at what they do... BLOW STUFF UP
If your going against alot of hordes though I'd say 2 preds with auto cannons and heavy bolters, or TL Lascannon and heavy bolters incase you come up against some fast moving hive tyrants or massively armoured Nobs and Warlord
